“If you think the great equalizer in rank-conscious Washington is the Department of Motor Vehicles or a summons to appear for jury duty, you haven’t been out to eat lately. Thanks to a ravenous appetite for fashionable food served in appetizer-size restaurants — and an abundance of millennial patience — the leveling agent for secretaries and Secretary of State alike boils down to this: More of us are waiting in line for dinner because restaurants aren’t taking reservations.”
— “No reservations? This restaurant trend has become harder to swallow,” Tom Sietsema, Washington Post

Kale. It’s a Superfood. It’s BIG. It’s everywhere, right?
“But what do the data say about how much kale is actually around? The U.S. Department of Agriculture started tracking the production of kale in 1997, and the closest proxy for consumption we have is something called “disappearance”: imports plus production minus exports. By that metric, divided by population, we arrive at the amount of kale the United States absorbed per capita ….”
“Kale was so much bigger in the 1990s,” Lydia DePillis, Washington Post blog (must-see graphs!)

A Washington Post article erroneously stated that 70% of the red meat eaten worldwide is goat meat.
What the authors meant to say: 70% of the world’s goat meat is bones.

“Before he lay in a hospital bed, convalescing after reconstructive knee surgery, I thought that Robert Griffin III would be the perfect person to take on a problem that’s been plaguing Washington for decades: our football team’s ill-considered, objectionable, offensive, racist, totally unacceptable name.”
— “Only RGIII can make the Redskins change their name. Here’s why he won’t.” Mike Wise, Washington Post

Washington Post columnist Joihn Kelly brought his week-long examination of squirrels to a logical conclusion by writing about hunting and eating the varmints. Alas, no recipes.
“I’ll have the squirrel pot pie with barbecued squirrel on the side,” John Kelly, Washington Post

The Washington Post is observing Veterans Day with a story previewing the Pentagon report on the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy:
“More than 70 percent of respondents to a survey sent to active-duty and reserve troops over the summer said the effect of repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy would be positive, mixed or nonexistent, said two sources familiar with the document. The survey results led the report’s authors to conclude that objections to openly gay colleagues would drop once troops were able to live and serve alongside them.”
— “Sources: Pentagon group finds there is minimal risk to lifting gay ban during war,” Ed O’Keefe and Greg Jaffe, Washington Post.
The chief authors of the study are Pentagon General Counsel Jeh Johnson and the Commander of U.S. Forces in Europe, General Carter Ham.

Real Househusband Tareq Salahi blames the Washington Post for the fact that the world sees him and his wife as “delusional grifters.” He told the Daily Beast‘s Nicole LaPorte that the Post revealed the Salahi’s family lawsuits, bankruptcy filings, and unpaid debts out of revenge. For what? For unpaid advertising bills from his bankrupt polo event and winery.
Only it never was his winery. See:
“Salahi 101: A Guide To The Lawsuits & Lies,” Jezebel.com
The couple had their lawyer send a stern email to fellow reality show cast members cautioning them to cease calling the Salahis “White House crashers.” Other “Real Housewives” told the press about the email, claim the duo, because they crave media attention.
When you Google “delusional grifters,” expect the search results to read “Tareq and Michaele Salahi.”

Two out of three American voters don’t like the Democrats. Three out of four don’t like the Republicans. But get this: registered voters told Gallup they’re going to vote for Republicans over Democrats by a 10-point margin.
Eugene Robinson explains:
“According to polls, Americans are in a mood to hold their breath until they turn blue. Voters appear to be so fed up with the Democrats that they’re ready to toss them out in favor of the Republicans — for whom, according to those same polls, the nation has even greater contempt. This isn’t an ‘electoral wave,’ it’s a temper tantrum.”
“The spoiled-brat American electorate,” Eugene Robinson, Washington Post.
