Blogs With Bite

Blogs with Bite is an occasional omnivorous sampling of food blogs and sites we find particularly tasty. Follow the trail of bread crumbs back to earlier editions, starting here.

Today’s serving of Blogs with Bite:

New York City Food Museum— Big Apple food of yore.  Public markets, pushcarts, oyster barges, breweries, eateries. You got a problem wit dat?

Eat me daily — Commentary, criticism and features on food, media, and culture. “Aggregation of links deemed important, irreverent, redeeming, absurd, or plainly awesome.”

Rachel Laudan— “A Historian’s Take on Food and Food Politics.” Tasty, thoughtful writing by this Mexico-based food authority.

World Carrot Museum —  What’s up, Doc? Carrot Museum curator John Stolarczyk knows. And how.

Offal Good— Cooking with “those parts of a meat animal which are used as food but which are not skeletal muscle.”  Unique, authoritative site and blog by Chris Cosentino. Not for the faint of heart, queasy, or Vegan.

Endless Simmer — Is that a great name or what?  A kitchen cabal led by Brendan Spiegel and Stefanie Gans writes this group blog. Festures, news, recipes, restaurant reviews, and commentary on food and drink of all types. Knowledgeable but unpretentious.

Readable Watchable Edible Potable — “Food and Drink in Books and Film.”  Recipes and culinary color, especially as found in international crime fiction.

Wild edible plants of the Polish countryside— A review article (with a much longer name) by Łukasz Łuczaj and Wojciech M Szymański in the estimable Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine. 112 species of plants have been used to make food and drink in rural Poland; half are in use today. Green vegetables, Fruits and seeds, roots, rhizomes, bulbs, herbs and seasonings, edible flowers and berries, used as food, snacks, seasonings, beverages.

The blackcurrant harvest on the Sandringham Estate  [video, 2:59] — Fruit farming on Her Majesty’s private estate in Norfolk.

Medieval Gastronomy in Images — Bibliothèque nationale de France. Food. Cooking. Meals. Beautiful.

Food Theme Parks of Japan — Food fun for the whole family. Shizuko Mishima reviews all your faves: Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum, Ikebukuro Gyoza Stadium, Ice Cream City, Jiyugaoka Sweets Forest, and the ever-popular Osaka Octopus Ball Museum. Yokohama proudly hosts Beer Village, but we regret to inform you that the Yokohama Curry Museum closed in 2007.

Cooking with beer— Recipes from RealBeer.com

Online NAL Thesaurus and Glossary —  Agricultural terms in English and Spanish, produced by the National Agricultural Library, USDA, and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture.

The dirty tricks of food photographers — Not all “food porn” photos are au naturale. Marjorie Burke tells all in Photocritic.

Gernot Katzer’s Spice Pages— Excellent reference work on 117 culinary herbs by this Austrian chemist with an interest in cuisines of Asia. In English and German.

BBC Good Food Blog — Not much to look at, frankly, but where else can you find out about a proper pudding?
