“Land of Hope and Glory,” written by Don Walker and Jimmy Barnes, recorded by The Barnestormers (Jimmy Barnes, get it?), 2023. Not to be confused with that pommy wheeze by Elgar and Benson. It’s Australian, mate.

Recognize the music to that ‘pommy wheeze’ as Pomp and Circumstance, to which untold numbers of graduates (including ourselves) have marched!

A 1901 military march by Elgar, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 in D, rewritten with added patriotic lyrics by A.C. Benson for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. “Pomp and Circumstance” is a quote from Shakespeare. It doesn’t get more British than that. The trio section, “Land of Hope and Glory,” was played (without the UK patriotic lyrics) at the Yale commencement of 1905, where Elgar received an honorary degree, and it’s been the processional every since, a musical icon. Contrast that with the cynical Australian lyrics here.
