Monica Lewis, 1922 — 2015

Monica Lewis, “America’s Singing Sweetheart,” replaced Peggy Lee in the Benny Goodman Band, had her own radio show and recording contracts, performed on Broadway, on early network television, in nightclubs and in movies. She died last week at the age of 93. Despite her impressive résumé, she will always be remembered as the voice of Chiquita Banana.

Happy Birthday, Marvin Gaye

Singer Marvin Gaye was born on April 2, 1939. In his set at the the 1964 T.A.M.I Show (above) he performed four of his early hits: “Stubborn Kind of Fellow,” “Pride and Joy,” “Can I Get a Witness,”and “Hitch Hike.” The dancers are goofy but the band, Jack Nitzsche‘s Wrecking Crew, includes Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Leon Russell,  Glen Campbell, and Plas Johnson.

Forget Rap Music's 'Robot Voice.' Hire a Robot Singer.
Rapper and producer T-Pain popularized that “robot voice” now infesting the world’s Pop Music recordings. But why imitate a singing robot when you can have a robot vocalist? A Japanese tech company has produced a robot chick singer who is remarkably life-like, at least compared to most of Japan’s aidoru pop stars. Of course, the most animated members of J-Pop girl groups are really digital animations.
