I Want to Come Home for Christmas

December 18, 2020

“I Want to Come Home for Christmas,” written by Forrest Hairston and Marvin Gaye, recorded and produced by Mr. Gaye in 1972. While there were other R&B Christmas songs about the Vietnam conflict, this may be the only one written from the POW point-of -view. The recording was not released until after Marvin Gaye’s death.

2020 note: Stay the hell home this Christmas. COVID-19 is not an appropriate yuletide gift.

McDonald’s in Vietnam

March 3, 2014

McDonald's in Vietnam

Vietnam’s first McDonald’s has opened in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). It’s the first fast food joint in town to have a motor scooter drive-through window and to stay open around the clock. This is McD’s 10,000th location in Asia. KFC, Pizza Hut, Burger King, and Starbuck’s already beat Mickey D’s to Indochina.

The General Director of the Vietnam McDonald’s licensee is Vietnamese-American investor Henry Nguyen, MD (Nguyen Bao Hoang), son-in-law of Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Starbucks Invades Vietnam

Starbucks Invades Vietnam

Starbucks is moving into Vietnam, and will open its first coffeehouse in Ho Chi Min City next month.  The chain already has 3,300 stores in 11 other countries in the China and Asia-Pacific region.

Talk about bringing coals to Newcastle. Vietnam has plenty of bad coffee already — they grow it. The country is the number one coffee exporter in the world. Last year Vietnam exported more coffee beans than Brazil, but they’re cheap robusta beans, not high-quality arabica beans like Starbucks uses.

The Vietnamese do drink lots of coffee, but they like it thicker than Starbucks’ dreadful Pike Place Roast. And then there’s the price issue. Per capita income in Vietnam is about US $1,270, and that won’t buy a lot of latte at “Fourbucks.”
