The Art of Binding at the GPO

July 10, 2020

In the age of online documents it’s now called the Government Publishing Office, but many still think of the GPO as the Government Printing Office (founded 1861). The GPO publishes and prints the workaday documents of the federal government, but its hand binders still edge-marble some publications. A CQ Roll Call video.

Guernica

January 23, 2020

“In 1937, in one of the worst civilian casualties of the Spanish Civil War, Fascist forces bombed the village of Guernica in Northern Spain. For Pablo Picasso, the tragedy sparked a frenzied period of work in which he produced a massive anti-war mural, titled “Guernica.” How can we make sense of this overwhelming image, and what makes it a masterpiece of anti-war art? Iseult Gillespie investigates.” A TED-Ed video.

The Invasion of America

August 12, 2019

“The story of Native American dispossession is too easily swept aside, but new visualisations should make it unforgettable.

Between 1776 and the present, the United States seized some 1.5 billion acres from North America’s native peoples, an area 25 times the size of the United Kingdom. Many Americans are only vaguely familiar with the story of how this happened. They perhaps recognise Wounded Knee and the Trail of Tears, but few can recall the details and even fewer think that those events are central to US history.”
