Bye-Bye Bambi: National Park Service Guns Down Deer in DC

In DC, the National Park Service begins its seasonal “Deer Management Program,” deploying NPS biologist-sharpshooters in Rock Creek Park to hunt whitetail deer in the middle of the Nation’s capital. This year the hunt may extend into Rock Creek neighbors, including Melvin Hazen Park, Soapstone Valley Park, Pinehurst Parkway, Glover Archbold Park, Battery Kemble Park and Fort Totten Park. The seasonal slaughter will commence tonight, November 16th, and continue every night until March 16, 2021. The Park Service is, um, shooting to reduce the population to 15 to 20 deer per square mile.

Last year, the NPS donated 1320 lbs. of venison harvested by the program to the DC Central Kitchen charity.

Brits Are Eating Bambi!
British diners are eating venison faster than Scotland can raise it. Maybe they’d like to nibble on some of the fresh whitetail deer roadkill from America’s annual vehicular deer harvest.

Does Santa Know About This?

Guess who’s coming to Christmas Dinner? Muslim friends! Main course? Halal reindeer meat. “It’s the tastiest meat in the world,” says Harry Dyrstad of Norway’s Vilteksperten slaughterhouse. ‘It is going to be exciting to see how Muslims receive the taste of reindeer. This is a completely new halal product that many Muslims have not had tasted before,” adds Mehtab Afsar, General Secretary of the Islamic Council of Norway.

Autumn Driving is Here!

October 4, 2011

Autumn Driving is Here!

Fall driving season is here. That means admiring colorful foliage and colliding with frisky deer. The downside: the average car-deer collision auto repair bill is $3,171. On the other hand, you get a heap of fresh venison, for free.

You’re most likely to run into a deer in Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Chances are 1 in 53, much better than the odds at West Virginia casinos. Compare the rates in your state here.
