Sorry Boomers, the Sixties Are Dead

July 31, 2019

The Age of Aquarius has been extinguished:

“Woodstock 50 organizers announced on Wednesday that the beleaguered music festival, which was supposed to take place Aug. 16 through Aug. 18, is officially canceled.

‘We are saddened that a series of unforeseen setbacks has made it impossible to put on the Festival we imagined with the great line-up we had booked and the social engagement we were anticipating,’ organizer Michael Lang, co-founder of the 1969 festival, said in a statement.

— “Woodstock 50th anniversary celebration canceled after lineup issues, financial problems,” Sonia Rao, Washington Post

Ach du Lieber und Stoller!

January 24, 2014

Herr Marvin Gaye singt das Lied “Wie Schon Das Ist.” Wunderbar!

Okay, it’s a Holland-Dozier-Holland tune and not by Lieber and Stoller. And it’s in German. Motown stars recorded their hit tunes in other languages, for export.  Of course, so did The Beatles.

Triumph of 20th Century Technology

Triumph of 20th Century Technology

This week marks the 50th Anniversary of a, um, highlight of Sixties psychedelic paraphernalia, the Lava Lamp. Created by inventor, RAF pilot, and nudist Edward Craven-Walker (1918 – 2000), the glowing glass of goop was first brought to market in the UK as the Mathmos Astro Lamp in 1963. In Sixties America, no dorm room or hippie crashpad was home without a Lava Lamp.  Just ask your groovy grandma, youngster.

The !!!! Beat

September 21, 2012

Tonight at DC’s Hill Center, another episode of The !!!! Beat, the strange 1966 R&B TV series  unearthed by WPFW’s Larry Applebaum:

Sept. 21: Volume Four includes performances by Freddie King, Martin, Maurice & The Radiants, The Beat Boys, The Poppies, Lee Watson & The Panthers, Johnnie Jones, Freddie King, Louis Jordan & The Tympany Five, Gatemouth Brown, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Gwen Davis, Robert Parker, Jimmy Church, Lattimore Brown, Joe Simon, Mamie Galore and Jamo Thomas.

Not all episodes are as as wild as the jam (above) by Etta James, Sir Lattimore Brown, Esther Phillips, Roscoe Shelton, & Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, and David “Fathead” Newman, but even the lip-synced performances are wonderful, and host Bill “Hoss” Allen is so incredibly awful he’s almost good.

“The lava lamp shows the difference between conceptual physics and practical engineering. The principles behind how it works are well known and obvious, but actually getting substances to do what it does is another matter.”

“The psychedelic physics behind the lava lamp’s hypnotic goo,” Esther Inglis-Arkell, iO9
