Published Drug Research Accents the Po$titive

Published Drug Research Accents the Po$titive

Scientific Method be damned, medical journals have an economic incentive for publishing papers with postive outcomes. When a drug study shows positive outcomes, pharmaceutical companies buy reprints of it in bulk to distribute it to prescribers.

Those purchases can add up to over $2 million. For journals like The Lancet ($40 annual revenue) and NEJM ($100 million/yr.), that’s huge. 41 percent of The Lancet’s 2021 income came from reprints. When it comes to drug studies, Big Phama’s thumb is firmly on the scale.

Channel Hopping

June 19, 2017

Channel Hopping

“It seems our desire for instant gratification has conquered politics. Voters are channel-hopping, snacking on ideologies and political styles, moving on as soon as they’re bored. In that light, Donald Trump is a political genius: His slippery, shifting positions on just about everything command attention and perfectly reflect the restless mood of the times. People are eager for something—anything—different, and damn any concerns about consistency.”

Ethiopia Shuts Down the Internet Over School Exam

June 3, 2017

Ethiopia Shuts Down the Internet Over School Exam

“Ethiopia shut down the internet on Tuesday (May 30) ahead of a scheduled national examination that was due to take place in the country on Wednesday.

Social media users noted that the internet service was interrupted from around 7 pm on Tuesday—reportedly to prevent exam leaks. About 1.2 million students are taking the grade 10 national exams, with another 288,000 preparing for the grade 12 university entrance exams that will take place next week.”

— “Ethiopia shut down the country’s internet to beat exam cheats,” Abdi Latif Dahir, Quartz

Starbucks World Domination

June 3, 2014

Starbucks World Domination
Circle, Montana (pop.615) is as far as you can get from any of the 11,563 Starbucks in America, 192 miles. Anywhere else in the States, you’re probably 4 or 5 blocks from one. In the cities of 63 other countries you might be even closer.

Seoul has 284 Starbucks, New York City has 277; Shanghai has 256. Chris Meller gathered the data from the company’s website, and Quartz presents it, nicely visualized:

“A cartographic guide to Starbucks’ global domination,” David Yanofsky, Quartz

America Changes the Channel on TV Dinners

April 9, 2014

America Changes the Channel on TV Dinners

“Frozen meals, long associated with the American affinity for eating dinner in front of the tube, are a nearly $9-billion business in the US, according to data from the market research firm Euromonitor. Through decades of intense growth, frozen foods have found their way into just about every American household—99% of them, according to a 2012 report by AMG Strategic Advisors (pdf).

But TV dinners are losing their ubiquity. Just ask Nestlé, which is struggling with its Lean Cuisine frozen food line. The food giant is even considering unloading its $400-million frozen foods business entirely. And with good reason. After nearly 60 years of sustained growth, frozen ready meal sales have finally started to dip. Since 2008, they have either fallen or come in just about flat.”

“America’s 60-year love affair with frozen TV dinners is over,” Roberto A. Ferdman, Quartz
