Adam Smith Endorses Obama Tax Plan

“Let me me ask you, what’s the better way to make our economy stronger? Do we give … tax breaks to every millionaire and billionaire in the country? Or should we make investments in education and research and health care and our veterans?”

— Barack Obama, April 12, 2012

Gingrich Loses Secret Service Detail

April 28, 2012

Gingrich Loses Secret Service Detail

The half-baked presidential campaign of Newt Gingrich lost its Secret Service protection Thursday night. That’s a shame, since Mr. Gingrich shares many interests with Secret Service agents, like philandering.

Newt Gingrich isn’t upset with losing his costly, publicly funded security. He’s still got something much more important to him: press coverage. Three reporters continue to chase his deflating-balloon of a campaign. As press assignments go, it’s more pleasant than most death-watch stakeouts.

Gingrich Campaign: What’s Next, a Bake Sale?

Gingrich Campaign: What's Next, a Bake Sale?

Former Tiffany Candidate Newt Gingrich is running out of money for his presidential campaign. Cut off by the Las Vegas casino owner who was bankrolling him, the visionary thinker has come up with a typically grandiose fundraising solution. From now on if you want your photo taken with the former House Speaker it will cost you 50 bucks. According to reports, it will take a mere 32,000 fan photos to get the Gingrich campaign out of debt.

‘My Super PAC Can Beat Up Your Super PAC!’

January 14, 2012

'My Super PAC Can Beat Up Your Super PAC!'

You probably think you know who’s running in the South Carolina Republican Primary. You’re wrong. The contenders are billionaires Sheldon Adelson, Foster Friess, and Jon Huntsman, Sr. They’ve given millions to huge political action committees (Super PACs) attacking the opponents of  (respectively) Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and (no surprise) Jon Huntsman, Jr.

Who’s funding the Super PAC behind front-runner Mitt Romney? Bain Capital, the private equity concern he unleashed into the realm of shadow banking. Other big donors to Restore Our Future include more Wall Street types and Mr. Romney’s co-religionists, the Marriotts.

Bachmann Sees the Light

January 4, 2012

Bachmann Sees the Light
Rep. Michele “Crazy Eyes” Bachmann (R, MN-6) has seen the light in Iowa, a red stoplight. She is halting her quest for the Republican presidential nomination. Mrs. Bachmann won the Iowa Straw Poll in August by an overwhelming 152 votes, and that’s about how many people voted for her yesterday in the Iowa Caucus.

Mrs. Bachmann’s Straw Poll triumph, together with her outstanding record as a taxpayer-hounding IRS attorney, education radical, submissive wife, Tea Party loon, fundamentalist zealot, and prima diva drama queen should have given her a lock on the GOP nomination, but Iowa can be fickle.

Goldie for President!

Goldie for President!

“Goldman Sachs, the global investment bank and financial services firm, announced Friday morning that it is running for president of the United States.”

“… the conglomerate will forgo donations altogether and instead finance the campaign with a portion of the $10 billion in taxpayer-funded bailout money the investment bank received in 2009. “

— “Goldman Sachs announces presidential run,” K.M. Breay, Salon

Newt Rises Again

November 22, 2011

Newt Rises Again
Newt Gingrich is rising in the polls like yeasty dough. Mr. G says he’s going to take the bloat out of government, but he’s looking a bit puffy himself, especially around the wallet:

“Gingrich ventures took in more than $105 million over a decade’s time,” Peter H. Stone, iWatch

Mr. Gingrich says he’s a historian, yet he wants you to forget his personal history of serial adultery, extravagance, and questionable business deals. He says if elected he’ll scrap the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and teach an online course from the White House. Maybe citizen-students will get the $1.6 million history lesson Professor Newt taught Freddie Mac.

But historians are valuable advisors, because history can repeat itself. Here’s an example: despite the predatory policy’s rejection by voters and the chilling example of the recent economic collapse, Newt Gingrich is recycling his proposal to take your Social Security funds and gamble them on Wall Street.

The Palin Bus Tour: Why

June 4, 2011

The Palin Bus Tour: Why

Sarah Palin is spending her summer vacation just like you, on a simple family trip funded by hundreds of thousands of dollars in political donations. Mrs. Palin, along with her parents, sullen pre-teen daughter Piper, and husband Todd (Alaska’s former First Thug), is motoring between historic East Coast sites in a chartered luxury coach with her name painted on it.

Is the trip a vacation or presidental campaign tour? Mrs. Palin won’t say, to the consternation of the media. The bus is being tailed by reporters and news crews as it meanders along its secret itinerary. Far from keeping the trip private, the “magical mystery tour” aspect merely spurs the media frenzy. Where will she be next?
