Politico updates Schoolhouse Rock‘s 1976 explanation of the march of federal legislation. No wonder schools don’t teach Civics anymore.

Trump White House Staff: A Whiter Shade of Pale

Trump White House Staff: A Whiter Shade of Pale

White House staff diversity, already low, is decreasing:

“Of the 55 highest-earning White House staffers, POLITICO was able to identify only a half-dozen who are not white. Along with [director of strategic communications Mercedes] Schlapp, that includes director of management and administration Marcia Lee Kelly, who is Korean-American, and Joyce Meyer, a Filipino-American who is a senior member of the legislative affairs team.”

“’Having diversity in a leadership team is clearly necessary for top performance,’ said Max Stier, the president of the Partnership for Public Service, a non-profit that advised the Trump transition team as it set up the government. ‘The proverbial group think, which is a real problem, becomes less of one when you have a diverse team.’

He added: ‘It’s not something that’s going to get better by accident. It’s something that gets better when people at the top prioritize it’.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment on Friday about the diversity of its staff.”

— “Trump’s inner circle gets whiter,” Andrew Restuccia, Politico

More:

“Trump has so few senior black advisers, Kellyanne Conway struggles to name one,” Emily Stewart, Vox

Bernie’s Spring Break

February 23, 2016

Bernie's Spring Break

Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign has been turbocharged by the energy of young people, particularly college students. But next month there’s a competing outlet for all that energy: Spring Break.

“This year’s spring break schedule clashes directly with a large swath of primaries and caucuses, a conflict that comes at the worst possible time for Sanders, who crushed his rival Hillary Clinton among young and first-time voters in the exit polls in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. The Democratic race is about to enter a four-week stretch where more than half of the party’s delegates will be awarded. But as the voting gets under way, one campus after another is closing down for weeklong breaks. In all, more than half a million college students from 14 states will be on spring break at the same time that the presidential campaign train chugs onto their campuses, according to a Politico analysis of the March 5 to March 26 primary and caucus states.”

— “Bernie’s spring break blues,” Darren Samuelsohn, Politico

Early Warning System

May 15, 2011

Early Warning System

The editors of Politico have done a great public service by publishing a 2012 Presidential Election Calendar.

This will allow normal people to avoid GOP presidential contenders as they tub-thump and fulminate across the country. Regular human beings can now adjust their routes and schedules accordingly and minimize disruption of their daily lives. Caution: forecasters predict heaviest activity in Iowa and New Hampshire.
