Roy Moore, Christian Warrior

Twice-defrocked Alabama judge, evolution-denying theocratic birther neo-confederate racist homophobe and all-around Christian Culture Warrior Roy Moore, now Alabama’s Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, has been accused of taking sexual liberties with a 14-year-old girl. He was 32-years old at the time and an assistant district attorney. Three other women have claimed he tried to make it with them when they were teens, too, and he plied one with wine when she was underage. No young boys have come forward (so far).

In response to these charges, Judge Moore blames the messenger, the Washington Post (Attention Jeff Bezos: this guy carries a gun),

“If these allegations are true, he must step aside,” said Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on behalf of all Republican senators. GOP senators saying “Amen” include Jeff Flake and John McCain of Arizona, David Perdue of Georgia, John Thune of South Dakota, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Richard C. Shelby of Alabama and Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania. Mr. Moore is running to fill the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions,  and refuses to debate his Democratic opponent, former U.S. Attorney Doug Jones.

Since his removal from the bench, Roy Moore has been handsomely (if surreptitiously) compensated though a nonprofit outfit he founded, now run by his wife, called  the “Foundation for Moral Law.” His daughter is on the board of directors, and his son, well-known to Alabama’s police, was an employee. Roy Moore believes in family values.

Boo! No Trick or Treat for Sex Offenders.

Boo! No Trick or Treat for Sex Offenders

Lights out for registered sex offenders this weekend. They’re forbidden from displaying Halloween decorations, keeping the porch light on, or handing out candy to neighborhood trick-or-treaters.

Police in Maryland, California, Texas, Long IslandLouisiana,  Georgia,  Indiana, and elsewhere will spend Halloween night ignoring the riotous hordes of drunks careening down streets and sidewalks, the gangs of teenage arsonists, and other seasonal threats in order to babysit former offenders. Of course, it’s worth it if it keeps our children out of danger.

But it doesn’t. Why? Because there is no evidence of a threat.

A comprehensive study released last year shows that when it comes to nonfamilial sex crimes against children, Halloween is just another day. “These findings raise questions about the wisdom of diverting law enforcement resources to attend to a problem that does not appear to exist,” conclude the researchers.

The real Halloween threat to kids? Getting hit by cars.
