Nutella Riots Rock France

January 26, 2018

Nutella Riots Rock France

While French President Emmanuel Macron talked trade in Davos, back home the République was rocked by retail riots. The Intermarché supermarket chain slashed the price of Nutella by 70%, causing chaos across the country. Customers fought, employees were punched, les flics were called.

The French really love that chocolate hazelnut spread on their baguettes in the morning. They consume 26 percent of world Nutella production.

“McDonald’s restaurants in Italy serve it on hamburger buns. Lifestyle websites cheekily offer lists of “signs you’re addicted to Nutella.” And at least one German soccer team dropped a player who couldn’t stop eating it.

Yes, a legion of snackers live for the hazelnut spread. And they’re not happy.

Nutella confirmed on its Twitter feed Wednesday that the recipe “underwent a fine-tuning” after Germany’s Hamburg Consumer Protection Center said on Facebook that  it appeared the recipe had changed.”

“‘Real cool,’ wrote one user, adding, ‘why not draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa too?’”

You Know You Need One: A Lock for Your Nutella Jar

September 2, 2015

You Know You Need One: A Lock for Your Nutella Jar

Most consumers believe that Nutella hazelnut-chocolate spread is sold in single-serving containers — as soon as they open the 35-ounce jar, they finish the whole thing. Thankfully most consumers can’t buy the 6-pound foodservice size. The gooey stuff is addictively tasty but it’s mostly sugar and palm oil, so it’s pretty unhealthy.

Help is on the way. Germany’s Daniel Schobloch has designed the Nutella Lock, an acrylic device that fits over the jar lid so it can only be opened with a key. He says it’s so your kids won’t eat all the Nutella, but we know better, don’t we?

Nearly 1000 of the gadgets have already been sold on German eBay at €9.99 ( $11) each. We expect to see a high-performance alloy version at Williams-Sonoma any day now.

In France, you can’t name your baby ‘Nutella’

January 27, 2015

In France, you can't name your baby 'Nutella'

A court in Valenciennes has ruled that a French couple cannot legally name their daughter “Nutella.” The court suggested “Ella” as an alternative.

Until 1993, French law decreed which first names were acceptable for children, but now judges rule against parental choices only if they feel these would subject the child to teasing, disparagement, or ridicule.

The Great Niederaula Nutella Heist

April 9, 2013

The Great Niederaula Nutella Heist

Police in the German town of Niederaula reported the theft of 5 tons of Nutella over the weekend. The artery-clogging spread, valued at 27 million calories, was stolen from a truck. Two weeks ago thieves in the same town helped themselves to a truckload of coffee worth US $39,000. Police spokesman Manfred Knoch agreed that local lowlifes might be planning a mighty big breakfast.
