NY AG Has NRA in the Crosshairs

NY AG Has NRA in the Crosshairs

New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleging years of fraud and corruption by National Rifle Association executives, filed a lawsuit Thursday seeking to dissolve the NRA. Attorney General James has jurisdiction since the purportedly nonprofit NRA was chartered in New York State in 1871. The suit outlines decades of self-dealing, questionable contracts to family and friends of NRA leaders, payoffs, luxury executive perks, lavish compensation, and tens of millions in financial misconduct. Since the allegations involve tax fraud, the state is sharing its information with the IRS. Bewhiskered General Ambrose Burnside, first NRA President, is no doubt rolling around in his grave.

The DC Attorney General, claiming that the NRA raided its own NRA Foundation to stem the losses of the NRA proper, filed a second lawsuit against the gun group.

The Trump Foundation Christmas Party Is Cancelled

The Trump Foundation Christmas Party Is Cancelled

This week New York State Attorney General Barbara Underwood announced that she is euthanizing the rogue Donald J. Trump Foundation. The so-called nonprofit outfit was directly run by Donald Trump and three of his spawn. Rather than engaging in charitable actives, said the AG, there was a“shocking pattern of illegality involving the Trump Foundation—including unlawful coordination with the Trump presidential campaign, repeated and willful self-dealing, and much more. This amounted to the Trump Foundation functioning as little more than a checkbook to serve Mr. Trump’s business and political interests.” This included funding Trump Senior’s election campaign, promoting his businesses, paying off his legal obligations.

As Charles Blow observes, “How can a family that can’t run a charity run a country?”

NPR. It stands for … NPR.

NPR. It stands for ... NPR.

National Public Radio has announced it will now be known as NPR. The Public broadcaster joins other image-conscious nonprofits in adopting a self-referential abbreviation, chief among them AARP. “Radio” sounds so old-fashioned, just like “Colored People” and “Retired People.” The “just-call-us-NPR” network is trying to emphasize its sizeable mobile, podcast, and web presence because the NPR radio audience largely comprises … retired people.

Oil Spill Slimes Environmentalists

Oil Spill Slimes Environmentalists

The catastrophic BP oil spill has destroyed the Gulf of Mexico marine and coastal ecosystems and the energy, fishing, and tourism industries of five states. It has also destroyed the credibility of The Nature Conservancy, a major nonprofit environmental organization.

The Conservancy accepted $10 million in cash and land from BP, and the oil company sits on the organization’s International Leadership Council (ILC). The ILC usually meets in June at the Conservatory headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, but the 2010 meeting schedule is unavailable (demonstrators are standing by).

The Nature Conservancy is trying to defend its involvement with BP on its blog. It is failingBig time. Just like BP.
