Electric Bike or Electric Motorcycle?

February 10, 2020

Electric Bike or Electric Motorcycle?

Every evening, untold thousands of New Yorkers get dinner delivered by electric bike riders, but those vehicles are technically illegal. NYPD officers have been ticketing deliverymen even though lunch at NYPD HQ gets delivered by e-bikes.

The root problem is definition: when is a bike not a bike? When does a “power-assisted bike” become a moped, motorscooter, or motorcycle? And when do electric 2-wheeler riders need operator licenses? As with e-commerce, ridehail, Airbnb, and consumer drones, lawmakers are fighting a rearguard action after technology got well ahead of regulation, and it’s hitting New Yorkers where they eat. Ironically, NYC says it will let UPS make deliveries by ebike.

Missouri Motorcyclists Want to Be Organ Donors

May 4, 2018

Missouri Motorcyclists Want to Be Organ Donors

A bill  introduced in the Missouri State Legislature by veterinarian and state Senator Dan Brown (R) would allow motorcycle riders over the age of 18 to decide whether to wear a helmet. The bill attempts to mitigate the ensuing increase in police, ambulance, and emergency room services by requiring those bareheaded riders to carry $1 million worth of insurance or more. What it won’t do is increase the number of ambulances, EMTs, cops, and emergency rooms in the Show Me State, so other folks will die because some guy on a Harley wants to feel the wind in his hair.

Not there wouldn’t be medical advantages. Repealing the mandatory helmet law would increase the pool of donor organs. Maybe Missouri motorcyclists who choose to forego helmets should be required to register as organ donors.

Pope’s Motorcycle Sells for $327,000

Pope's Motorcycle Sells for $327,000

Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide motorcycle owned by Pope Francis sold for $327,000 at an auction in Paris. That’s 20 times it’s estimated value. A leather jacket also donated by His Holiness sold for $68,000. Proceeds will go to a charity hostel and soup kitchen in Rome.

Note: You’ll find slightly different sale prices reported by different news outlets. The media, unlike the Pope, are not infallible.

The Pope's Harley

Last June His Holiness Pope Francis was presented with a customized 1,585cc Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide by the manufacturer to to mark the motorcycle brand’s 110th anniversary. The Holy Hog will be auctioned by Bonhams in Paris on February 6th and proceeds will go the toward renovation of a hostel and soup kitchen run by Caritas Roma.

You may recall that Pope Francis doesn’t like to use the “Popemobile” limousines and drives himself around Vatican City in a secondhand Renault 4L. After he auctions off the Harley, maybe he can find himself a nice used Vespa.

Actually, H-D gave the Pope a leather Harley jacket (not the one pictured above) and that’s on the block, too.

Motorcyclist Protesting Helmet Law Takes a Header and Dies

500 bare-headed motorcyclists participated in the 11th Annual Helmet Protest Run in Onondaga NY, near Syracuse, protesting New York’s law requiring bikers to wear helmets. Philip Contos, 55, was riding a 1983 Harley Davidson with the Onondaga chapter of American Bikers Aimed Towards Education (ABATE) when he flipped over the bike’s handlebars, hit his head on the pavement, and was killed. Police said that Mr. Contos would have survived had he been wearing a helmet.
