An Empty Vessel in the Big Apple

An Empty Vessel in the Big Apple

Hudson Yards has opened, a new office, upscale condo and luxury shopping development built over an active trainyard on New York’s West Side. The city and state chipped in $6 billion for the project, but maybe that’s not as bad as it sounds.

What is bad, undeniably, is the 150-foot-high, 16 storey, copper-covered selfie magnet looming over Hudson Yards plaza called Vessel. The structure, consisting of 154 flights of stairs, may be a perfect metaphor for New York: you keep climbing but get nowhere.

Workers on Beam, on a Truck, on Bleeker Street

“Lunchtime on Top of a Skyscraper,” by Sergio Furnario. Based on a 1932 photograph by Charles C. Ebbets.

Don’t know why it was on a truck on Bleecker Street last Sunday, but we enjoyed it immensely.

New York Bike Riders Prepare for Winter

Actually, that’s not a bicycle with a sweater. It’s an example of “yarn bombing.”  Read about the genre here:

“Graffiti’s Cozy, Feminine Side,” Malia Wollan, New York Times

The wooly bike above is parked on East 23rd Street in Manhattan, across the street from the School of Visual Arts.

Storm Surge in New York

August 28, 2011

Storm Surge in New York

Hurricane Irene is now a tropical storm, but the surge caused by its huge vortex of winds has reinforced the incoming tide and caused flooding of the southern tip of Manhattan Island, including Battery Park, the ferry terminal, and the edge of the Financial District. At this time we do not know if Con Edison intends to cut off the area’s electrical power or if the Stuyvesant High School swim team is doing laps outside, on Chambers Street.

Elena Kagan’s Secret Life

Elena Kagan's Secret Life

Most accounts say Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan was raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, within walking distance of Zabar’s.

Wrong!

The Solicitor General and SCOTUS nominee actually lived in Stuyvesant Town on New York’s East Side until her teens.

“No big deal,” you say? You must not be a New Yorker.

You expected, um, another topic? Honestly, some people …. Well if you must know, her law school chum Sarah Walzer says Ms. Kagan dated guys. We know she’s not kinky with it because she never dated classmate Elliot Spitzer.

There. Happy now? Honestly ….

Note: NTTAWWT, alright? Jeez.

Culinary note: Ms. Kagan did not have a nosh-deprived childhood before moving near Zabar’s. Look here.
