Do Not Pass Go, Lance Armstrong. Pay $10 Million.

“Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong has been ordered to pay $10 million to a promotions company after an arbitration panel found he conducted an ‘unparalleled pageant of international perjury, fraud and conspiracy’ during his career.” —  Austin Knoblauch, Los Angeles Times

Armstrong is also being sued by his whistle-blowing teammate Floyd Landis and the U.S. Government for defrauding the cycling team’s sponsor, the U.S. Postal Service, by using performance-enhancing drugs.

Tour de France Starts, Le Monde Interviews Lance Armstrong

The 100th Tour de France began Saturday in Porto-Vecchio, Corsica, the first time the famous bicycle race has started on the french island. It will also be the first time the Tour finishes in France. All the living winners will be there except for disgraced seven-time champion Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of his titles for doping.

That didn’t keep Mr. Armstrong out of the french headlines. He granted interviews to the country’s leading newspaper. “The Tour cannot be won without doping,” he told Le Monde.

Lance Armstrong’s New Charity: Oprah’s Cable Network

January 17, 2013

Lance Armstrong's New Charity: Oprah's Cable Network
Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong was forced to abandon his Livestrong foundation, but he seems to have found a new pet charity: Oprah Winfrey’s money-losing OWN video venture. OWN has been bleeding money at an alarming gush, over $300 million as of last May. Oprah’s exclusive Armstrong interview will be a powerful shot in the arm, and the Queen of Confessions is hyping it for all it’s worth.

As for the interview subject himself, here’s the best take:

Nike Drops Lance, Lance Drops Livestrong

Nike Drops Lance, Lance Drops Livestrong

“Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him. Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner.

Nike plans to continue support of the Livestrong initiatives created to unite, inspire and empower people affected by cancer.”

‘Case closed: Armstrong doped’

October 11, 2012

Case closed: Armstrong doped

“The word ‘alleged’ should now be dropped from any description of the way doping permeated and enabled Lance Armstrong’s cycling career.”

“The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s release of its ‘reasoned decision’and staggeringly voluminous supporting documents that resulted in its move to strip Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and ban him from elite competition for life — charges he opted not to contest — changes all that, and rewrites Armstrong’s sporting epitaph from alleged to proven user of performance-enhancing drugs and techniques.

There is no other logical conclusion. After today, anyone who remains unconvinced simply doesn’t want to know.”

Anatomy of a Blogger

March 30, 2009

Anatomy of a Blogger

Once again the desperate dinosaurs of the failing mainstream media ape the innovations of the Blogosphere:

On March 21st, while riding through the millionaire-infested Hamptons, celebrity stunt journalist Matt Lauer of NBC’s Today Show dislocated a shoulder falling off his bicycle after dodging a deer.

On March 23rd, fading sports star Lance Armstrong, desperate for publicity, crashed into the news by bumping his bike into the spandex-clad speedsters of the Vuelta Ciclista Castilla y León in Spain.

NotionsCapital.com gets the Yellow Jersey, though, having dislocated a shoulder a full month ago. We did not resort to using $9,000 custom-fitted Trek Madone 6.9 Pro bicycles to do it, either. In deference to the current economic downturn, we followed the lead of DC’s thrifty contingent workers and took a header on Metro station tiles (cost: $1.65). Given such enormous differences in operating costs, the conventional corporate media are clearly doomed.
