Congregation Responds to Church Shooting Danger

The subject of church shootings came up at dinner last Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. “Well, I’ve got my gun on me,” said an 81-year-old church member, echoing the “good guy with a gun” defense popular in that neck of the woods. He pulled out his .380 Ruger handgun, accidentally pressing the trigger.

“A bullet fired across the palm of the 81-year-old’s hand and toward his 80-year-old wife, who was sitting in a wheelchair next to him. It ripped through her lower left abdomen, out the right side of her abdomen, into her right forearm and out the backside of her forearm. The bullet then struck the wall and ricocheted, landing under the wife’s wheelchair ….”

— “Man accidentally shoots himself and his wife at a church, shortly after a discussion on shootings,” Marwa Eltagouri, Washington Post

The elderly couple were medevacked to a Knoxville hospital for treatment. Their injuries are said to be non-life-threatening, but they’re in their 80s, for Pete’s sake. It’ll be a while until they’re back in the pews.

Pistol Packin’ Bra Kills the Woman Wearing It

Pistol Packin' Bra Kills the Woman Wearing It

Michigan Republican official Christina Bond, a 55-year-old motorcycle-riding church administrator, former military police officer and mother of two, fatally shot herself in the head on New Year’s Day while adjusting her bra holster.

Some Americans carry handguns for self-protection, and each year thousands of them shoot themselves, hundreds fatally. Congress and state legislatures have blocked firearm injury research, so we don’t know how many of those victims kept their handguns in Second Amendment support garments or in their underpants.

Shootings at 3 Gun Shows on 'Gun Appreciation Day'

While firearms enthusiasts around the country rallied in support of their gun show loophole, gun owners at three gun shows managed to shoot each other:

“Police say a security guard and two others were wounded Saturday afternoon at the Dixie Gun & Knife Show after a shotgun went off as it was being checked in. The gun owner was planning to sell the weapon at the show, which attracts thousands of people to the fairgrounds in West Raleigh.”

“As part of Saturday’s national Gun Appreciation Day, gun-rights supporters marched around the Legislative Building in downtown Raleigh. State Capitol Police estimated the crowd numbered around 200 people.”
