Equal Pay Day 2018

April 10, 2018

Equal Pay Day 2018

It’s Pay Equality Day, last of the 99 extra days into 2018 that American women worked to finally make the same amount of wages that men made by Dec. 31, 2017. The concept originated with the National Committee on Pay Equity in 1996 as a way to point out the economic injustice of  American women earning 82 cents when men are earning a dollar. Want to change that inequity? Look here.

In a timely decision, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that employers can’t use workers’ salary histories to justify paying women less.

Gender Pay Gap To Be Closed in Only 170 Years

Women are expected to earn as much as men as early as January 2196, reports the World Economic Forum. WEF is the organization behind that annual gathering of radical populists at Davos.

The global gender pay gap has widened since 2015, when it was expected to close in 118 years. The United States has fallen in the rankings in the past year, from 23rd to 45th place in gender wage equality.

The Gender Wage Gap

The Gender Wage Gap

“Women earn 79 cents for every dollar a man makes.”  Factually correct, but that doesn’t reflect the complexity of the problem. Sarah Kliff explains:

Patricia Arquette Minds the Gap

Patricia Arquette Minds the Gap

When Patricia Arquette accepted the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, she had words of support for other working women (especially working moms): “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.”

While not everyone gave her performance (or her backstage chatter) rave reviews, Jesus smiled on it (okay, it’s Jared Leto). And so did  Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez:

Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap

“According to calculations from the Equal Payback Project, American women are owed $29,811,746,430,000 (that’s U.S. dollars, also known as U.S. golden dollars with Sacagawea on them) due to the wage gap.

Working female Sarah Silverman is fund-raising for this exact amount. She promises that if this fund-raising goal is met, each woman in America will receive a check. If not, the money will go the National Women’s Law Center, which advocates for legal and structural changes to support professional women. They’re only trillions dollars away from removing this gap off the list of gaps facing women today.”
