2013 DC Blues Festival

The 25th annual DC Blues Festival is today, Saturday August 31st. Starting at Noon, enjoy The UnXpected, Fast Eddie & the Slowpokes, the DC Blues Society Band with Ayaba Bey, Austin “Walkin’ Cane,” Big G, and Albert Castiglia. it’s all free.

There’s also a John Cephas Memorial Workshop Stage (hosted by tastemaker Dr. S.O. Feelgood) featuring hands-on fun for the whole family: an instrument petting zoo, vocal workshop, a harmonica workshop for kids, and acoustic Blues by folks from the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation.

Don’t miss the highlight of Washington’s Labor Day Weekend, and be sure to thank the folks from the DC Blues Society when you get there.

Smithsonian Folk Festival 2011

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is back on the National Mall in Washington DC  Thursday June 30th to July 4th and July 7th to July 11th. This year’s free Festival features Rhythm & Blues, the culture of Colombia, and the Peace Corps.

Bluebird Blues Festival September 26th

There’s no website for Sunday’s free Bluebird Blues Festival, but Culturemob’s Michael Rugel provides a superb summary. Two stages, eight great acts including Clarence Carter, Phil Wiggins  & Rick Franklin, Charles “Big Daddy” Stallings, Diunna Greenleaf & Blue Mercy, Warner Williams & Jay Summerour, and a Blues workshop with Dr. Barry Lee Pearson.  Kids’ activities and food, too.

2010 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The 2010 Smithsonian Folklife Festival begins today on the National Mall. The free event is a highlight of Washington’s summer. Dates: June 24 to 28 and July 1 to 5.

This year, visitors can experience the cultures of Mexico and the DC area’s Asian Pacific American communities and peek into the workings of the Smithsonian itself. There are special evening events, including this Saturday’s concert by Haitian artists Boukman Eksperyans and Tines Salvant (Saturday, June 26, 6PM). Be sure to pick up a program book and learn more about the people you meet and what you see, hear, and taste.
