Robbers Hit a French McDonald’s While the SWaT Team Eats Dinner

June 10, 2016

Robbers Hit a French McDonald's While the SWaT Team Eats Dinner

A couple of guys walked into a McDonald’s in Besançon, France on Sunday evening, but they didn’t come for the Boeuf Ranch Moutarde or Croque McDo. They robbed the joint at gunpoint. Among the 40 diners, however, were 11 off-duty members of Groupe d’Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale or GIGN (these guys), crack anti-terrorism police. As the desperadoes made off with about $2,000 in cash, one of them tripped and was disarmed by GIGN, who shot the other guy outside McDo’s when he didn’t drop his weapon. No diners or pommes frites were harmed during the take-down, and the injured burger bandit will recover.

“Armed robbers thwarted trying to hold up McDonald’s where 11 special forces officers happened to be eating dinner,” Henry Samuel, The Telegraph

The Golden McNugget of Japan

The culture of Japan, full of mystery. The Tea Ceremony. Zen Buddhism. Hello Kitty. And now an 18-karat gold Chicken McNugget.

To mark introduction of two new dipping sauces, Fruit Curry and Creamy Cheese, McDonald’s Japan is giving away a solid-gold Chicken McNugget weighing 50 grams (1.8 ounces), worth about $1500. Clues are being dropped on Twitter.

Pizza consumption at highest level in four years

We’re eating more pizza, according to sources in the pizza-industrial complex. The average American ate pizza four times a month in 2015, up from 3.4 times a month in 2014. 32% of consumers say the nutritional value of pies is important to them, up from 25% last year. But forget about veggies —  we want meat, prosciutto in higher-end joints and chicken at all eateries.

If you don’t care about statistics, here’s a pizza report from the NHL:

McDonald’s in China: Great Leap Forward

McDonald's in China: Great Leap Forward

McDonald’s plans to open 1,250 new restaurants in China over the next five years. The burger monger already has 2,200 outlets in the People’s Republic. China will be the fast food chain’s second-largest market after the USA. And Americans can’t get McD’s Corn Cup or Taro Pie.

McDonalds in Russia

February 22, 2016

McDonalds in Russia

The Russian economy is in a nosedive thanks to falling oil prices, Western sanctions, and general lack of faith in the Ruble. But the county’s McDonalds’ burger biz is booming, and the fast-food chain is adding 60 new Russian eateries this year, and now has over 500 outlets from St. Petersburg to Siberia. What gives? Use of locally-sourced products keeps prices down, and avoids the retaliatory foreign food bans imposed after the Ukraine crisis triggered Western economic sanctions. McD’s also added a line of lower-priced pork burgers to fit the slimmer wallets of today’s Russian consumers. Are those fried brie nuggets still on the menu?

More:

“Russia’s economy is tanking. But McDonald’s is still lovin’ it,” Dan Peleschuk, Global Post

Serve the People! KFC Will Spin Off Eateries in China.

January 2, 2016

Serve the People! KFC Will Spin Off Eateries in China.

Yum! Brands, parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell,  is spinning off Yum Brands in China as a separate publicly traded firm. Sales in China’s 4,600 KFCs have been tanking for the last 3 years in the wake of Avian Flu and food safety scares. Adding new menu items, a new mobile app, updated employee uniforms, and celebrity promotions by film biggies Chen Kun and Kē Zhèndōng haven’t helped much.

More:

“The company behind KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell just isolated the most dangerous part of its business,” Ashley Lutz, Business Insider

Update:

“China is no longer a complete nightmare for KFC,” Alison Griswold, Quartz

Burger King & Tim Hortons

December 12, 2014

Burger King & Tim Hortons

Everyone likes burgers. Everyone likes fresh coffee. But not everyone likes the impending merger of the USA’s Burger King and Canada’s Tim Hortons.

Canadians are demanding that the new corporation’s HQ locate in Oakville, Ontario, job security for all Tim Hortons franchise employees in the Great White North, that Tim Hortons remain a distinct brand, with a board that’s at least 50% Canadian, and more. Politely demanding, of course.

Here in the States, critics claim that Burger King will avoid $117 million in U.S. taxes through the merger. Of course, no one will care if the BK creepy King branding the burgers is replaced by Dudley Do-Right as long as those Whoppers keep coming.

So does Burger King’s acquisition of Tim Hortons mean that the US triumphed over Canada? Nope. Burger King is owned by a Brazilian private equity firm.

More:

“We finally have an idea of how much money Burger King will save by moving to Canada,” Roberto A. Ferdman, Washington Post
