Glasgow Bouncer University

Glasgow is known as an historic center of higher education and raucous pubs, so a school for bouncers just made sense.  A vintage BBC film clip.

The Phase

Cosmic balance returned to Barracks Row two weeks ago when the Phase 1 Bar and Nightclub was reopened after three months of  renovation. Founded in 1970, “The Phase” is said to be the oldest continually operating lesbian bar in the USA and the oldest LGBT bar in the Nation’s Capital. That’s pretty amazing, since America’s lesbian bars are an endangered species.

Ruins of Ancient Washington

The Lil Pub is no more. Capitol Hill’s 18-seat bar closed in January, leaving an empty, forlorn little hut near Eastern Market and Barracks Row. It was built in 1937 as Little Tavern No. 20, an outpost of  eatery emperor Harry F. Duncan, purveyor of tiny hamburgers (“Buy ‘Em By The Bag!“).  The last Little Tavern closed in 2008, but many of the distinctive buildings have been re-purposed. 

The building at 655 Pennsylvania Avenue SE was converted into a bar some 30 years ago by retired DC cop J.J. Elliott who was killed in the place by an intruder. New proprietor Howard Schurr (and the gentrification of other nearby pubs) made the place the Hill’s preeminent dive bar.

Boxcar Tavern Opens Friday

Eastern Market will have a new neighbor starting Friday. Boxcar Tavern opens on December 30, 2011 at 224 7th Street SE, formerly the site of the Petit Gourmet food shop. Check out the handsome tavern website and the write-up and photos of the interior at Thrillist .

DC Fourth of July Travel Advisory

The Fourth of July will be celebrated in the District of Columbia with the traditional street closings and detours. Travel into and around Washington DC will be slow tomorrow as tourists jam the District to watch fireworks on the National Mall. Be careful who you cut off on the Wilson and Memorial bridges on your way in, though, because no one likes pyrotechnics more than the pistol-packing patrons of Champps sports bars in Northern Virginia.

Virginia’s new law permitting concealed weapons in saloons went into effect Thursday, and patrons of Champps celebrated with Glocks and iced tea. There are good reasons to pack heat in Virginia’s sports bars. You certainly need a semiautomatic firearm at Champps to defend your family against those dangerous Loaded Chips appetizers (cheddar, pepperjack, mozzarella, Asiago cream sauce, bacon, green onions, sour cream).

Have a safe and sane Independence Day.
