Pope's Motorcycle Sells for $327,000

Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide motorcycle owned by Pope Francis sold for $327,000 at an auction in Paris. That’s 20 times it’s estimated value. A leather jacket also donated by His Holiness sold for $68,000. Proceeds will go to a charity hostel and soup kitchen in Rome.

Note: You’ll find slightly different sale prices reported by different news outlets. The media, unlike the Pope, are not infallible.

The Pope’s Harley

The Pope's Harley

Last June His Holiness Pope Francis was presented with a customized 1,585cc Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide by the manufacturer to to mark the motorcycle brand’s 110th anniversary. The Holy Hog will be auctioned by Bonhams in Paris on February 6th and proceeds will go the toward renovation of a hostel and soup kitchen run by Caritas Roma.

You may recall that Pope Francis doesn’t like to use the “Popemobile” limousines and drives himself around Vatican City in a secondhand Renault 4L. After he auctions off the Harley, maybe he can find himself a nice used Vespa.

Actually, H-D gave the Pope a leather Harley jacket (not the one pictured above) and that’s on the block, too.

The Queen’s Knickers

The Queen's Knickers

Queen Elizabeth II left a pair of her underdrawers on a private plane in 1968, and they’re being auctioned off to the highest bidder. A pair of Queen Victoria’s panties fetched $9,000 in a recent auction, and these royal bloomers are expected to fetch a similar price. Prospective bidders should keep on eye on Hanson’s, the Derbyshire auctioneers.

We think “The Queen’s Knickers” would be a super name for a pub or a jolly good title for a sequel to the film “The King’s Speech.”

Happy Trails, Trigger

Christie’s auctioned off the contents of the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum last week. Roy’s stuffed and mounted horse Trigger was sold for $266,000 to cable network RFD-TV, which also bought the stuffed remains of Roy’s dog Bullet for $35,000.  RFD-TV will use them as studio props when it begins airing Roy Rogers movies this fall.

Roy Rogers’ saddle sold for $386,500, his guitar $8,750, and a pair of his boots fetched $7,500. The jeep Nellybelle sold for $116,500 and Roy’s silver-dollar-studded 1964 Bonneville brought in $254,500.

Dale Evans’ preserved horse Buttermilk sold for $35,000. Dale’s handwritten lyrics to the “Happy Trails” theme song sold for $27,500, and the crowd spontaneously sang the tune at the end of the sale. Total raised by the auction: $2.98 million.
