Smile, Darn Ya, Smile!

“Smile, Darn Ya, Smile!”, a Merrie Melodies cartoon starring Foxy, 1931. Directed by Rudolf Ising; principal animation by Rollin HamiltonNorm Blackburn, and Isadore Freleng; music supervisor: Frank Marsales, score performed by Abe Lyman and his Brunswick Recording Orchestra. Voice actors were uncredited.

Merrie Melodie cartoons were sort of early music videos, and each featured a contemporary hit. The title song, written by Max RichCharles O’Flynn and Jack Meskill, was red hot in the depression year of 1931, and was recorded by many artists, includng Al BowllyBilly CottonJay Wilbur and his BandSnooks & His Memphis StompersBen Selvin &  the Sunshine BoysJoe Morgan and his Palais D’or Orchestra – all your faves!

Brooklyn’s Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings cook the sizzling latkes out of Hanukkah, all 8 days of it, in this video by illustrator Rich Terrana. The tune is on the Holiday Soul Party. The band recorded a live version of “8 Days” at the NPR studio in DC .
