Election 2016: Is It Over Yet?

Election 2016: Is It Over Yet?

There’s a single question everyone’s been asking about the 2016 election: Why is his skin orange um, when will it be over? The last polling place to close will be in Adak, Alaska, and when that closes it will be 1:00 AM Wednesday on the East Coast.

Barring any challenges or manual recounts with hanging chads, we might know the winner of the presidential contest as early as 9:00 PM EST, according to some observers.  Or we can wait for those votes from Adak.

So how can we best survive this election night vigil? Here’s great advice from MoJo‘s Jenny Luna:

Quiet

November 8, 2016

Vote — it’s today. No, you can’t just text it, it’s not reality TV, despite what Republicans think.

Not registered? You can register at the polls and then vote in: Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Washington DC. Live in Rhode Island? You can register and vote for president only. In North Dakota you don’t need to register, you just go vote.

So vote.

Nasty Woman Is Winning Bigly

October 21, 2016

Nasty Woman is Winning Bigly

“Nasty woman.” — Donald J. Trump, October 19, 2016, Las Vegas

That was the most coherent statement made by the Republican presidential candidate at Wednesday’s pseudo-debate, the last such spectacle before Election Day ( vote on November 8th for Clinton, November 28th for Trump).

Within an hour of Mr. Trump’s comment, a quarter of a million tweets mentioned it, as women everywhere embraced “nasty woman” as a rallying cry for Clinton. Bigly.

The Law & Order Candidate

October 12, 2016

The Law & Order Candidate

Donald Trump declared himself “the law and order candidate” back in July. He certainly has an impressive legal record for someone who is not a lawyer, having been involved in over 3500 lawsuits. During Sunday’s Town Hall talk-a-thon he proclaimed “We’re going to bring back law and order,” then demonstrated utter contempt for the rule of law.

Although any viewer of televised Law & Order fiction knows “You have the right to an attorney,” Mr. Trump berated Hillary Clinton for acting as court-appointed legal counsel for an accused rapist when she was a young lawyer in Arkansas. And of course the GOP candidate sticks to his promise of extrajudicial mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.

But Mr. Trump’s promise to jail his political opponent has provoked a greater reaction, since that’s what “banana republic” dictators do, not United States presidents. “It’s just awfully good that somebody with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” observed Secretary Clinton. Many agree.

That Mexican Thing

October 7, 2016

that-mexican-thing

Former talk radio host and Indiana Governor Mike Pence has a way with words, but during his prime-time smirk-a-thon with over-caffeinated Senator Tim Kaine he out-did himself. Although he chastised Mr. Kaine for repeating talking points —  “pre-done lines” — Mr. Pence had one of his own. When Tim Kaine referred to Donald Trump’s smear of Mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals, Mike Pence, in a clumsy attempt at Reagan’s “There you go again,” replied “Senator, you whipped out that Mexican thing again.”

“That Mexican thing” will be all anyone remembers about Tuesday’s so-called debate.

¿Taco Trucks? ¡Sí, por favor!

September 6, 2016

¿Taco Trucks? ¡Sí, por favor!

“My culture is a very dominant culture. It’s imposing and it’s causing problems. If you don’t do something about it, you’re going to have taco trucks on every corner.” — Marco Gutierrez, Latinos for Trump.

Marco Gutierrez’s parents were among the unauthorized immigrants who received amnesty in 1986 during the Reagan administration.

Phillip Bump of the Washington Post ran the numbers for one taco truck at each intersection in the USA.  3.2 million taco trucks x 3 employees per truck = 9.6 million new taco truck jobs, and a need for more mechanics, gas station workers and mechanics, agricultural, food supplier and warehouse workers, and food truck management services. An estimate puts the total employment figure at 63 million new jobs. “We’d likely need to increase immigration levels just to meet the demand.”

“And the tacos are made in America”, observes Steve Lopez of the LA Times, “unlike some of the clothing sold under Trump’s name.”

In Denver, Democrats have parked a taco truck outside a Trump campaign office. The truck serves tacos, burritos, and voter registration forms.

Trump Is Running a Hat Business, Not a Campaign

August 26, 2016

Trump Is Running a Hat Business, Not a Campaign
“. . . Trump’s organization spent more money in July on the now-iconic ‘Make America Great Again’ red hats, Trump T-shirts, and mugs than on the staff whose job it is to run the campaign,” observes Zaid Jilani. The campaign paid more than $1.8 million for T-shirts, mugs, stickers, and the trademark hats but only about half that ($921,000) on staff and consultants.

More:

“Donald Trump is Spending More on Hats and Other Merchandise Than on Campaign Staff,” Zaid Jilani, The Intercept

GOP Finds the 24 Hispanics Who Back Trump

August 23, 2016

GOP Finds the 24 Hispanics Who Back Trump
After some extreme vetting, the Republican Party found two dozen Spanish-surnamed Americans who support the GOP presidential candidate. Four are rogue Evangelical pastors and the rest are long-time GOP party hacks, including one from Puerto Rico, where American citizens can’t even vote for President. Donald Trump has less support among Hispanic voters than any Republican candidate since 1996.

Mr. Trump met with his “Hispanic Advisory Council” atop the border wall Trump Tower on Saturday. Participants said the candidate suggested that he wants to figure out a “humane and efficient” manner to deal with undocumented immigrants. They took this to mean some kind of a path to legal status rather than a vaguely sinister reference to ethnic cleansing.
