January 20, 2012

“Etta James, one of the great voices of the 20th century who fused R&B with gospel and blues, and scored landmark hits with “At Last,” “Tell Mama” and “All I Could Do Was Cry,” died today from complications related to leukemia. She was 73. James had been battling health problems for many years.”

Herman Cain’s Smoking Gun

October 26, 2011

Herman Cain's Smoking Gun

Herman Cain’s hired gun, Chief of Staff Mark Block, a former employee of the Koch brothers’ AFP fined in 1997 for violating state campaign laws, smokes. That’s what he does in a strange campaign video that has gone viral.

Some see this as confirmation that the Cain campaign is just blowing smoke, but Mr. Cain has a long friendship with Big Tobacco. In his years as a high-powered Washington lobbyist, a career curiously ignored by his supporters, he made the National Restaurant Association a national powerhouse with money from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and big alcohol companies. The price: Mr. Cain fought smoking bans in bars and laws lowering alcohol blood levels for drunk driving.

DC Streetcar, 40 NW Route

October 12, 2011

This is great 1950s footage of Washington DC’s streetcars. The system shut down in 1962, and the car barn you see here has gone condo. The District is building a new electric surface transit line but, sadly, it won’t be taking this route.

Kagan Wants Supreme Court on TV Even if the Camera Adds 10 Lbs.

May 10, 2010

Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan thinks the high court is ready for prime time — or C-SPAN, anyway. Solicitor General Kagan endorsed televising SCOTUS in an on-camera interview last July (on CSPAN, of course). Judge Judy, unavailable for comment, probably won’t sweat the competition.

Have your dinner music and eat it, too. For dessert.

On a diet? Try Spike Jones.

Dylan’s Christmas Polka Party

December 27, 2009

Bob Dylan performs a spirited version of  Hal Moore and Bill Fredricks’ “Must Be Santa” on his Christmas album. The tune was also recorded by Mitch Miller in 1961 and Lorne Greene (with a kiddie choir) in 1966. The hilarious British attempt by Tommy Steele, OBE is more Music Hall than polka.

Brave Combo’s spirited “Dyno” (“push”) version of the tune may have been Dylan’s inspiration.

Royalties from Bob’s Christmas in the Heart recording will be donated to charity in perpetuity.
