Tiger Swings Again

Tiger Woods is returning to professional golf at the Masters next month. The storied event is held at the genteel Augusta National Golf Club.

” The controlled environment of The Masters is … a perfect spot for Woods to return to the sport after a carefully orchestrated rehabilitation.”

“It’s the only tournament where the media is not allowed inside the ropes and members run the news conferences.” — “ Los Angeles Times.

Mr. Woods could not have found a safer place than the Augusta National Golf Club for his re-emergence after a messy sex scandal. The place doesn’t have any women members.

Tiger Woods Named 2009 Man of the Year

Professional golfer Tiger Woods has been named 2009 Man of Year.

Okay, we say “Person of the Year” these days, but Mr. Woods has made a man-sized dent in the news lately.

And the title was not bestowed by Time Magazine but by New York Times columnist Frank Rich, who observes:

We keep being fooled by leaders in all sectors of American life, over and over. A decade that began with the “reality” television craze exemplified by “American Idol” and “Survivor” — both blissfully devoid of any reality whatsoever — spiraled into a wholesale flight from truth.

Read it. Mr. Rich makes a persuasive case for the golfer. Time‘s editorial rationale for their choice, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, is as weak as the economy he is alleged to have saved.

Tiger Scores

Tiger Scores

The media are covering golf as never before, thanks to Tiger Woods. Suddenly a game played by pear-shaped men in gaudy duds on ecologically wasteful courses, where alcoholism and gambling are rampant, is sexy.

The connection to alcohol remains, of course — most of Mr. Woods’ extracurricular partners seem to be cocktail waitresses, and he sat out the Breathalyzer Invitational at his exclusive home course in Florida. Experts agree that he needs to work on his drive.

Sports fans should keep this in perspective, though. If he wants to match the record set by NBA champion Wilt Chamberlain, the PGA’s Tiger Woods has a long way to go.
