Car Cigarette Lighters

March 6, 2023

Americans used to smoke cigarettes, and they smoked them while driving, so cars had ashtrays and cigarette lighters. The lighter’s electric elements would broil cigarette ends, filling the car with a toasty aroma. Your car probably has a vestigial lighter today. A video by Zack Pradel explains.

Smoking

Smoking

“For the first time ever, more Americans said they smoke marijuana (16%) than tobacco cigarettes (11%) in a Gallup survey conducted July 5-26. The milestone is the result of decades of anti-tobacco campaigning in the US and a string of successful state-by-state marijuana legalization efforts. It’s the latest sign that a budding cannabis sector is displacing the waning power of the once-mighty tobacco industry.”

— “More Americans are smoking marijuana than tobacco cigarettes now,” Nicolas Rivero, Quartz

Herman Cain’s Smoking Gun

October 26, 2011

Herman Cain's Smoking Gun

Herman Cain’s hired gun, Chief of Staff Mark Block, a former employee of the Koch brothers’ AFP fined in 1997 for violating state campaign laws, smokes. That’s what he does in a strange campaign video that has gone viral.

Some see this as confirmation that the Cain campaign is just blowing smoke, but Mr. Cain has a long friendship with Big Tobacco. In his years as a high-powered Washington lobbyist, a career curiously ignored by his supporters, he made the National Restaurant Association a national powerhouse with money from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and big alcohol companies. The price: Mr. Cain fought smoking bans in bars and laws lowering alcohol blood levels for drunk driving.

April 20, 2010

DC Council Passes Marijuana

The Council of the District of Columbia voted unanimously to make marijuana available to chronically ill patients in Washington, DC. In a cosmic coincidence, the action took place on April 20th, World Marijuana Day. Heavy. The Council will take a final vote on the measure later this month.

Smoking Guns

Smoking Guns

To the surprise of many in the tobacco-growing state, the Virginia Legislature is on the verge of banning smoking in the Old Dominion’s restaurants and bars.  A bill passed the State Senate on Tuesday, and Governor Tim Kaine and  Republican House Speaker William Howell agreed to a compromise smoking ban proposal on Thursday. Passage of the measure seems assured.

On the other hand, the Virginia Senate passed a bill allowing permit holders to carry concealed handguns into restaurants and bars as long as they don’t drink alcohol and inform management that they are armed.

You really think some underpaid Virginia waiter is gonna tell an armed smoker to snuff out his butt?
