2017 Coast Guard Academy Commencement Whine

May 17, 2017

2017 Coast Guard Academy Commencement Whine
President Donald Trump delivered the commencement speech to the 2017 graduating class of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. Faced with young people committed to public service, he spoke about himself,  blaming the messengers for his problems:

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately – especially by the media.  No politician in history – and I say this with great surety – has been treated worse or more unfairly.”

Adulterer and Dissembler Speaks to Impressionable Young Christians

May 14, 2017

Adulterer and Dissembler Addresses Young Christians
On Saturday, renowned sinner and U.S. President Donald J. Trump, flanked by Secret Service agents and 2 Corinthians, gave the commencement speech to graduating students at the world’s largest Christian college, Liberty University. He was introduced by University President Jerry Falwell Jr., the gun-totin’ Christian lawyer famously sired by televangelist and Liberty U. founder Jerry Falwell Sr., who had endorsed Mr. Trump during the election. 1300 LU students and a prominent university board member protested the endorsement.

Even though Mr. Falwell Jr. has encouraged Liberty University students to carry concealed handguns on campus and keep them in their dorms, firearms were not permitted in Lynchburg’s Williams Stadium during commencement exercises. Oh ye of little faith ….

Mr. Trump urged the graduates to adhere to the basic founding principles of our Republic, Christian Nationalism, critic-bashing, and college football. Since 30% of Americans are not Christians, will their citizenship be revoked? And if you’re counting critics, 58% of your neighbors disapprove of the job President Trump is doing. And of course many people prefer the NFL to college football. No wonder Trump is fast-tracking Deportation Force recruiting.

Liberty University Mascot: Donald Trump

October 18, 2016

Liberty University Mascot: Donald Trump

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr., the gun-totin’ Christian lawyer famously sired by televangelist and Liberty U. founder Jerry Falwell Sr., has forgiven admitted sexual predator and GOP candidate Donald Trump, whom he had endorsed. Mr. Falwell says he will vote for Trump even if the sexual assault charges are true. Liberty University students, not that forgiving, are concerned about Mr. Falwell’s defense of the Republican creep:

“While he occasionally clarifies that supporting Trump is not the official position of Liberty University, he knows it is his title of president of the largest Christian university in the world that gives him political credentials.”

“… Donald Trump is not just any politician. He has made his name by maligning others and bragging about his sins. Not only is Donald Trump a bad candidate for president, he is actively promoting the very things that we as Christians ought to oppose.”

Pepper Spray University Gets Schooled About PR

April 18, 2016

Pepper Spray University Gets Schooled About PR

In November 2011 the worldwide Occupy Movement reached the campus of the University of California at Davis. Protesters staging a sit-down strike were pepper-sprayed by UC Davis campus police in riot gear. It wasn’t a pretty picture, and outrage spread across the country and the Web. Now the Sacramento Bee has discovered that the UC Davis administration spent at least $175,000 trying to scrub bad publicity about the ugly incident from the Internet and repair the school’s reputation.

Understandably, news of the cover-up attempt has sparked fresh outrage, new campus demonstrations, and calls for the Chancellor’s resignation. And, despite the scrubbing effort, the 2011 UC Davis pepper spray incident is now a Google trending topic.

Big Money Buys Nino a Law School

April 8, 2016

Big Money Buys Nino a Law School

A DC area law school was originally named after a Virginia patriot, but just like money can buy you lots of law, it can buy you law schools. George Mason University Law School announced it would change its name to the Antonin Scalia School of Law. Who are the buyers? $10 million came from Charles Koch, who believes there is entirely too much law. And the remaining $20 million? From an anonymous donor, probably in honor of the Citizens United decision.

Washington wags quickly realized the law school’s new abbreviation would be ASSoL or ASSLaw, and hilarity ensued. GMU reconsidered its awkward acronym and changed the name to Antonin Scalia Law School (ASLS). Somebody better tell the American Society of Liposuction Surgery.

‘Two Corinthians Walk Into a Bar ….’

January 27, 2016

'2 Corinthians Walk Into a Bar ....'

When Republican presidential hopeful, shady golfer and adulterer Donald Trump spoke at fundamentalist Liberty University recently, he quoted from his “favorite book,” the Bible, which someone else read for him (he “has people…”). Mr. Trump elicited ridicule by citing Second Corinthians as “Two Corinthians.” Oops.

Maybe The Donald would have been better off quoting from his “second favorite book,” Art of the Deal. That’s the autobiography he paid Tony Schwartz to write for him.

Really smartWharton grad Donnie Trump may have flunked Bible School, but that didn’t stop gun-totinlawyer and Liberty U. prez Jerry Falwell Jr. from endorsing him. Mr. Falwell, like his televangelist daddy, is a man of faith, facts and democracy be damned.

Football Team Sends University of Missouri President to the Showers

November 10, 2015

Football Team Sends University of Missouri President to the Showers

In 1839, 176 years ago, the slave state of Missouri founded a university at Columbia, the first public institution of higher learning west of the Mississippi. In 1950, 65 years ago, the University of Missouri at Columbia admitted its first black student. Columbia is about 100 miles from Ferguson, so it is unsurprising that recent racial incidents on campus were of concern to many students and faculty members, especial if they are African American. What was surprising: Inaction on the part of University President Tim Wolfe.

Campus protests, begun in September, were met with administration lip-service. Last week a UM grad student went on a hunger strike. Nothing. On Saturday the University’s football team announced it wouldn’t practice or play for the rest of the season unless University President Wolfe resigned. On Monday morning he did.

The Mizzou Tigers play the BYU Cougars on Saturday, November 14th , 6:30 PM CST at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

The University of Missouri motto: Salus populi suprema lex esto, “Let the Welfare of the People be the Supreme Law.” Seems like it takes a concerned Southeastern Conference team of enforcers, though.

Perfect Pizza Through Science!

October 8, 2014

Perfect Pizza Through Science!

Researchers at the University of Auckland (in partnership with Fonterra, the world’s largest dairy products exporter) used a machine to measure the integral elements of possible pizza ingredients as precisely as possible, and then published a paper about it in the Journal of Food Science. … ‘Quantification of Pizza Baking Properties of Different Cheeses, and Their Correlation with Cheese Functionality.’”

“For cheese to brown, the paper explains, it needs to lose moisture first. For the moisture to evaporate, blisters need to form, because where they lift the surface of the cheese, free oil can run off and expose the surface to raw heat. And for a blister to form, steam needs to collect in a pocket and push up the cheese.”

“This is why mozzarella makes for good browning. First, it doesn’t have much free oil. Second, it is very elastic. Third, it contains a lot of moisture. So steam pockets form easily, which create healthy blisters, which quickly expose the surface to browning.”

— “Here is the recipe for perfectly browned pizza cheese as established by science,” Sonali Kohli, Quartz (links added)

What’s In a Name?

What's In a Name?

In an effort to attract English-speaking students, Japan’s Kinki University is changing its name. Actually, the old name probably sounds pretty attractive to most American teenagers ….

Kinki U (really “Kinki Daigaku”) refers to the school’s location in the Kinki (aka Kansai) region of Honshu Island, which includes the city of Osaka. Starting next year the school will be known as Kindai University.

Chobani Commencement

May 20, 2014

Chobani Commencement

Hamdi Ulukaya, the “Turkish king of Greek yogurt” in America, gave the commencement address last Sunday at the State University of  New York at Albany, of which he is an alumnus. Mr. Ulukaya, who built Chobani into a billion-dollar business in five years, has been called “the Steve Jobs of Yogurt.” He’s also been called a yogurt thief by his ex-wife, who says he swiped the Chobani recipe from Fage yogurt.
