Gimme Some Skin, My Friend

November 9, 2022

“Gimme Some Skin, My Friend,” written by Don Raye, Gene De Paul, and Red Mack, performed by The Andrews Sisters in the 1941 Abbott & Costello film In the Navy. The greeting gesture had been know in African American culture since the 1920s. Even Al Jolson used it in 1927, in The Jazz Singer. These days it’s known as the “low five,” a retronym differentiating it from the “high five.”

2022: People will do anything to get what they need!

July 12, 2022

“It’s the year 2022… People are still the same. They’ll do anything to get what they need. And they need SOYLENT GREEN.” 1976 movie trailer.

Soylent Green, MGM’s 1973 science fiction thriller, is set in the distant year 2022, when unchecked population growth, global warming, and infrastucture decay make New York City — and the world — nearly unliveable, except for the wealthy few who monpolize resources. Sound familiar?

The movie is loosely based on Harry Harrison‘s 1966 novel Make Room! Make Room!, set in 1999.

More:

“Soylent Green predicted a grim 2022. What did the dystopian movie get right?” Amanda Kooser, CNET
