Starbucks in Italy: 'Costruiscilo, e loro verranno'

Espresso made it’s world debut in Milan at the 1906 World’s Fair. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz claims his visit to Milan 35 years ago inspired him to go into the coffeehouse business, so he’s thanking the Italian city by draining business from its venerable coffee bars. The huge Milanese Starbuckery opened Friday in an historic former post office, and plans are brewing for Starbucks in Verona, Venice, and other Italian towns.

Starbucks in Shanghai

Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room opened Wednesday in the HKRI Taikoo Hui luxury shopping complex at 789 West Nanjing Road in Shanghai. It’s the world’s largest Starbucks, 30,000 square feet, with more than 400 employees, and can serve up to 550 people at a time, according to the company. Customers can use Augmented Reality technology to see the coffee making process and use mobile payment via Alibaba.

The first Starbucks Reserve opened in Seattle in December 2014, and the company plans to open a 43,000 square foot location on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue in 2019. More Reserve Roasteries are scheduled to open in Milan, New York, Chicago and Tokyo by 2020.

Starbucks has more than 600 coffee shops in Shanghai, more than any other city in the world, and has committed to operating 5,000 stores on the Chinese mainland by 2021.

Starbucks to Bring Espresso to Italy

Starbucks is coming to Milan, and Italian cappuccino lovers are frothing mad. The java giant’s CEO Howard Schultz claims his visit to Milan 33 years ago inspired him to go into the coffeehouse biz, so he’s going to thank the ancient city by draining business from its cafés. The first Milanese Starbuckery will open in 2017, and plans are brewing for Starbucks in Verona, Venice, and a couple of other Italian towns.

Walmart may be closing many US stores, but Starbucks is opening 500 new coffee shops in China every year for the next 5 years. Starbucks currently has 2000 shops located in 100 Chinese cities serving Green Tea LattesIced Shaken Blackcurrant Raspberry Juiced TeaMango Passion Fruit and Tea Blended Juice Drink, and Red Bean Green Tea Cheesecake. A latte costs about $6.

The cups are red for the holidays, but with a clean design devoid of tree ornaments or snowmen. What, no snowflakes? Another assault in the War Against Christmas!

DC Cat Café Opens June 20th

Crumbs & Whiskers, DC’s first cat café, is opening at 3211 O Street NW in Georgetown on June 20th. Kickstarter backers can schedule now, Gentlemeow’s Club members can sign up on June 15th, and the rest of us must wait until June 18th.

So reservations are required; sounds pretty exclusive. Will there be valet parking?

Espresso in Space!

If  you want decent coffee in space, invite the Italians.

When Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano was on the International Space Station in 2013, he really missed having a decent cup of coffee. Samantha Cristoforetti, an Italian flight engineer from the European Space Agency, has been on the ISS for a year and feels the same. Lavazza and Italian tech firm Argotec just delivered an experimental ISSpresso Machine to her so she can finally get espresso in space. NASA threw in a matching set of high-tech coffee cups for zero-gravity sipping.

Of course now an Italian astronaut will want a decent bombolone or cornetto.

Caffè Latte Is Not What You Think It Is

“Perhaps the latte’s most popular association, at least currently, is with a certain level of affluence. Conservatives complain about ‘latte liberals’ who are out of touch with the working class ….

But the notion that lattes are a sign of privilege may be off-base. Kyla Wazana Tompkins, a professor of English and gender and women’s studies … told Op-Talk that ‘the latte, while it may be attached on a certain level to too much upper-class food knowledge and pretension, it really is no longer an upper-class drink.’ She explained: ‘No matter how many kale salads Starbucks puts in their case, Starbucks is a fast-food purveyor.’ The latte, she argued, ‘is a high-calorie food that’s being pushed in an industrialized way largely to working-class people.’ And, she added, ‘it’s important to think about the explosion of all of these industrialized lattes, all these frozen lattes, all the Frappuccinos, as links to a larger problem of creating cheap, high-calorie, low-nutrition food for working-class people.’”
