Australia Will Kill Millions of Kitty Cats

July 21, 2015

Australia Will Kill All the Kitty Cats
20 to 30 million feral cats roam Australia, killing 75 million animals each night. 29 of the continent’s mammals have been lost to extinction, and feral cats are implicated in 28 of these eradications. More than 120 Australian animals are currently at risk of extinction by feral cats, which also spread diseases that affect farm livestock.

These critters are not the mild-mannered moggies British colonists brought with them since arriving in 1788 but ferocious felines weighing up to 30 pounds. The Australian government wants to kill 2 million of these furry furies in the next 5 years.

Aussie PM Chugs a Beer

April 21, 2015

Aussie PM Chugs a Beer

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott chugged a glass of beer in 7 seconds on Saturday whilst celebrating with members of the UTS Bats Australian Rules football club. The schooner reportedly held about two-thirds of a pint; assuming an Imperial Pint of 568 ml, that’s about 380 ml.

Former PM Bob Hawke is said to have chugged 2.5 pints (1420 ml) in 11 seconds back in 1955. Mr.Hawke’s rate of chug (1420/11) was 129.09 ml/sec, while Mr. Abbott’s rate of chug (380/7) was a puny 54.29 ml/sec. Mr. Abbott is a Liberal and Mr. Hawke was a Labor leader; perhaps there’s a political lesson here.

GOP ‘Cranks & Crazies’

September 21, 2012

GOP 'Cranks & Crazies'

The Republican Tea Party loons of the U.S. Congress have become world famous, and no wonder, since their capture of the GOP endangers the entire global economy. The most recent observation of this was by Australia’s deputy PM and finance minister, Wayne Swan:

“Let’s be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world’s biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over a part of the Republican Party. Global markets are nervously watching the positioning of hardline elements of the Republican Party for signs that they will dangerously block reasonable attempts at compromise.”

Team Obama Signs Duncan

Potomac Playground Patter:

Player-Coach Barack Obama (6’1″) continues to build a strong basketball bench for his new DC team, adding Chicago’s Arne Duncan (6’5′) at Secretary of Education and Shooting Guard/Small Forward positions. Mr. Duncan co-captained the Harvard team, and played for the Rhode Island Gulls and New Jersey Jammers (USBL).

While he didn’t make the cut for the Celtics, Arne Duncan played Australian ball with Latrobe in the North-West Tasmania League and Melbourne’s old Eastside Spectres in the National Basketball League.  When not shooting hoops with Mr. Obama, Mr. Duncan works for the Windy City’s public schools.

Here are facts, opinions, and rumors from around the Web:

“He was one of the most intelligent players, of the imported players, I’ve ever brought out – in terms of understanding the game,” his first coach, Brian Goorjian, said …. Gerard Wright and Michael Cowley, “Basketball star in the court of Washington,” Sydney Morning Herald
