President Trump invoked the Defense Production Act to compel meat processing plants to stay open even though they are hotspots for coronavirus infection. COVID-19 has infected thousands of meat plant workers, killing at least 30, and now has claimed its fourth USDA meat inspector. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, charged with protecting the safety and quality of food Americans eat, can’t even protect its own workers under the Trump administration.
Update: The Midwest Center for Investigtive Reporting found that, as of May 13, there have been at least 14,000 reported positive COVID-19 cases tied to meatpacking facilities in at least 181 plants in 31 states, and at least 54 reported worker deaths at 30 plants in 18 states.
