“New Year’s Day,” written and performed by the band U2 at a 2001 concert at Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland. this is not really a holiday song since the lyrics, written in 1982, refer to Poland’s Solidarity Movement, then suppressed under martial law:
Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered, black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it’s true, it’s true
We can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one
