Gun Enthusiast & Football Fan Persecuted by FBI

Toledo businessman and convicted killer Richard Schmidt amassed an arsenal of 18 guns and assault rifles, 40,000 rounds of ammunition, and body armor despite his record as a violent felon. A White Supremacist, his activities only endangered the lives of people in ethnic minorities, so naturally he was ignored.

But then he went too far. Mr. Schmidt had the temerity to counterfeit NFL team jerseys, diverting dozens of dollars from the coffers of America’s professional football monopoly and the bank accounts of billionaire team owners. After getting a tip, FBI squads swiftly descended on his  store and home. Some red lines simply cannot be crossed. The NRA is one thing, the NFL quite another.

Mr. Schmidt was active in the Vinlanders Social Club, a White Supremacist skinhead group based on a fantasized mythology of North American Viking settlement and worship of the god Odin, which espouses violent racist views. Vinlanders have escaped scrutiny to date since U.S. law enforcement is preoccupied with spying on America’s mosques.

Authorities do not know how the convicted violent felon, forbidden from owning firearms, amassed his arsenal. That isn’t due to incompetence; thanks to the NRA, federal law does not allow the kind of record keeping that can identify straw buyers, track private off-the-books sales, and keep guns out of violent criminal hands.

Richard Schmidt pleaded guilty to federal gun and counterfeiting charges in July, and will be sentenced in October. Football’s oligarchs can breathe a sigh of relief; inflated jersey prices are saved. Let the new NFL season begin!

“Conviction of Toledo man for stockpiling weapons began with the tracking of camisoles,” John Caniglia, Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Suspected white supremacist and convicted felon stockpiled guns and ammo — but authorities aren’t sure how,” Erik Ortiz, New York Daily News

“Feds investigate how suspected white supremacist — a felon — obtained arsenal,” Michael Isikoff, NBC News
