Federal Judge John Roll Assassinated in Arizona

Federal Judge John Roll Assassinated in Arizona
John McCarthy Roll, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, was assassinated in Tucson today. Nominated by President George H.W. Bush at the recommendation of Senator John McCain, he joined the court in 1991.

Police have arrested 22-year-old Jared Loughner in the shooting incident, which also killed a 9-year-old girl and four other Americans. Twelve other people were wounded, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D, AZ-8). Rep. Giffords, whose Tucson office was vandalized after her healthcare reform vote, had organized today’s non-political “Congress on Your Corner” event.

Judge Roll had received death threats after agreeing to hear a controversial case involving undocumented immigrants. After a handgun-carrying protester was questioned at a 2009 political rally for Rep. Giffords, the Arizona legislature passed — and Governor Jan Brewer signed — a law allowing the carrying of concealed firearms without permits.

With vitually no gun laws, Arizona is a major source of weapons for Mexico’s murderous drug cartels. Tourism has also been a major industry in the Western state until recently.  The private prison industry continues to thrive there.

63-year-old Judge John Roll had just stopped by to see his friend Rep. Giffords after attending Mass.

Christina Taylor Green had just been elected to her elementary school student council, and a neighbor brought her to the “Congress on Your Corner” event to show her democracy in action. Miss Green has been born on September 11, 2001 and was featured in rhe book Faces of Hope: Babies Born on 9/11. Her father is a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers and her brother Dallas is named after their grandfather, former Phillies Manager Dallas Green.

University of Arizona student Daniel Hernandez applied pressure to Gabrielle Giffords’ wounds until medical help arrived. Mr. Hernandez had been an intern in the congresswoman’s office for five days.

Statement by Chief Justice John Roberts, Jr.:

“The violence in Arizona today has senselessly taken five lives and inflicted tragic loss on dedicated public servants and their families. We in the judiciary have suffered the terrible loss of one of our own. Chief Judge John Roll was a wise jurist who selflessly served Arizona and the nation with great distinction, as attorney and judge, for more than 35 years. I express my deepest condolences to his wife Maureen and his children, as well as the other victims and their families. Chief Judge Roll’s death is a somber reminder of the importance of the rule of law and the sacrifices of those who work to secure it.”

Three people helped subdue gunman Jared Loughner: Patricia Maisch grabbed the gunman’s magazine, preventing him from re-loading his handgun, and Roger Sulzgeber and Joseph Zimudie subdued him.

Campus Police at Pima Community College removed Jared Lee Loughner from classes and the school library becuase of disruptions on five occassions, but didn’t suspend him until he posted a YouTube video claimimg the college was “Unconstitutional.” Loughner and his parents were called in for a meeting and he “voluntarily” withdrew from enrollment rather than submitting to psychological counseling.
