Gulf Oil Spill Spreads

Gulf Oil Spill Spreads

The Deepwater Horizon oil slick on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico is 53 miles long and 34 miles wide. On the bright side, it sort of looks like a swan.

Things look bad underwater, too. Giant oil plumes are spreading across the Gulf seabed; one of them is ten miles long. Currents could carry the oil anywhere from Yucatan to the Atlantic coast of Florida. The effect on sea life is expected to be catastrophic.

BP and Transocean are mounting a 5th attempt to contain the gushing crude oil. The relief well is still not complete, two containment domes were abandoned, and workers were unable to insert a siphon tube in the well pipe. An attempt to insert a smaller tube is now underway.

If only BP and Transocean would devote the same effort they exert in their other containment effort, their vigorous fight to limit their financial liability for the disaster they produced.

The media have reported that President Obama maybe considering a nuclear solution to the massive Gulf Oil Spill.

NO I am not joking; leastwise I don’t find it amusing.

It’s so surreal… like a sci-fi movie. The earth is threatened by a huge hole in its crust, leaking crude oil like a highly pressurized volcano and threatening to kill all life in the oceans. The solution? The military detonate a nuclear bomb in an attempt to melt the cap rock and seal the leak.

But this is no science fiction. As reported on May 14th, Barack Obama sends nuclear experts to tackle BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil leak:
