In a dramatic move Monday night, curators at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum installed a startling new neo-realist sculpture on the Independence Avenue side of the facility. The installation was an after-hours surprise, even to police, who rushed to the site fearing terrorism. The donut-shaped building has long been the favorite art museum of DC law enforcement officers.
Washington Post art critic Blake Gopnik has called the new sculpture “the epitome of what has come to be dismissed as ‘plop’ art,” but if you want to judge for yourself, hurry. This is a temporary touring exhibit, and facilities around the country are expecting its speedy delivery.
