Blogs with Bite is an occasional omnivorous sampling of food blogs and sites we find particularly tasty. Follow the trail of bread crumbs back to earlier editions, starting here.
Here’s a fresh serving of Blogs with Bite:
Fancy Fast Food — “Yeah, It’s Still Bad for You — But See How Good It Can Look!”
Cicerone Certification Program — Education program to develop sommeliers for beer.
International Central Services Toaster Museum — “The world’s largest online toaster exhibition.” Jens Veerbeck’s beautifully designed site features US and European bread-browning devices and answers mankind’s eternal question, “What’s my old toaster worth?”
Chakali — Recipes, primarily from the state of Maharashtra in western India. In English and Marathi. Read more about Maharashtrian cuisine here and here. There are cooking videos (in several languages), too.
The Candy Wrapper Museum — “… where wrappers are to be enjoyed as art, nostalgia, and humor.” In the name of paper preservation, the curator ate most of the perishable, corrosive candy bars, an astounding act of professional sacrifice.
White on Rice Couple — Todd Porter and Diane Cu cook, garden, write, photograph, and blog with élan. They offer readable tips on all these topics, plus a recipe index. Sierra and Dante help (they recommend the flax seed dog biscuits).
Wasted Food — Johnathan Bloom blogs about American food waste and ways to avoid it. 40 percent of USA food raised for consumption is wasted — overlooked by mechanical harvesters, “culled” by packers, wholesalers and supermarkets because of visual imperfections and bad packaging, left to rot in our refrigerators. Some remedies: Glean, recover food and donate unused eats, go trayless, shop and eat better.
Wild Yeast — Artisan blogger Susan Tenney bakes and writes about bread. She lives in the Bay Area, where bread is the state religion. Yeastspotting, her weekly aggregation of bread blogging, should not be missed.
Francis Lam — Like good, unpretentious food and good, unpretentious writing? Read Francis Lam.
Bacon Haikus — Side pork cured and smoked/ Celebrated on the Web/ Salty like the sea
Herbivoracious — Software engineer Michael Natkin interned at Seattle’s Cafe Flora . His vegetarian food and cooking blog is killer app-etizing.
Phở Fever — More than a website; this is a tidal wave of Phở (“fuh,” Vietnamese noodle soup). A recent innovation by Indochinese standards, Phở is thought to be the Northern Vietnamese adaptation of the French pot au feu. Learn the basics (and how to eat the dish), feast your eyes on Phở photos, then consult the directory of 2604 Phở restaurants and 3659 reviews (search by state, zip code, or area code). If you live in Canada or Australia, you can still feed on Phở.
Epicurious Food Dictionary — “Culinary Terms & Cooking Definitions.” 4,000 of them, with search.
Gravy — A quarterly publication of the nonprofit Southern Foodways Alliance. Download the PDFs (free). Look over the cookbooks while you’re at it.
SoyInfo Center — Willam Shurtleff and Akiko Aoyagi’s massive accumulation of historical, bibliographic, and other data on soy and soy-based food and industrial products. Keyword Search, timelines, image gallery, free downloadable bibliographies.
I Shot the Chef — Stephan Maloman shoots the chef, with a camera. She’s Candace Maloman, his wife. Wonderful food photos; good recipes and breezy writing.
