Spring Break Surfin’

Spring Break Surfin'

College students: Spring Break is a good time for reflection, especially in the hours after your hangover lifts but before your parents wire your bail money. Take this moment to reconsider your life goals. The economy is at low tide, and who knows what jobs (if any) will be available when you graduate? Fight despair and follow your waves of passion. Declare a new major: surfing.

Giving fresh meaning to the phrase “college boards.” the folks at Surfline have hit the beach with a list of the ten best colleges for surfers.

The rankings:

1.  University of California at San Diego
2.  University of California at Santa Cruz
3.  California Polytechnic State University
4.  University of California Santa Barbara
5.  University of Hawaii
6.  University of North Carolina, Wilmington
7.  University of Rhode Island
8.  Pepperdine University
9.  Humboldt State University
10. Florida Institute of Technology

Descriptors include: Proximity and Access to Surf, Surf Class(es), Surf Team, Surfing Professors, Surfing Alumni, Current Rippers, How Hard to Get In, Known Curriculum, Animal House/Party Factor, Male/Female Ratio, Cost, Extra Credit, Demerits. It is unclear which of these were ranking factors and what weighting scale was used (Cal Poly surfers: work on that when the swells are slack). There are photos of lucious local waves near each school for you visual learners.

Admissions contact information is provided. Ask about credit transfer policies before you strap the boards atop the woody.

See you around campus … or at the beach.
