Ayers Ejected, Eh?

Ayers Ejected, Eh?

William Ayers, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, arrived at Toronto’s City Centre Airport Sunday,  entering Canada from the USA, something he did last year and a dozen times over the past two decades.

Dr. Ayers was slated to speak at the Centre for Urban Schooling at University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, to the principals of  the Toronto District School Board, and on CBC television. He spent three hours at the airport instead,  speaking only to the Canadian Border Services Agency, before being put on a plane back to the States.

Why? The CBSA isn’t saying, and Dr. Ayers  doesn’t know.

Dr. Ayers has been welcome in Canada before; why not now?  What happened between this year and last year?

Maybe the opinions of another distinguished education authority carry more weight up north than in the USA.

The Canadian Association of UniversityTeachers (CAUT) published an open letter of protest to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Note to Yanks: “Eh?” is a quintessential Canadianism, eh?
