Plumbing the Mystery

Plumbing the Mystery

His name isn’t Joe, it’s Samuel. He’s not a licensed plumber, and he already has a tax problem.

Joe the Plumber” AKA Samuel J. Wurzelbacher had questioned Barack Obama about his tax policy at a rally, and seemed skeptical. He was brought to the Presidential Debate by the McCain campaign, and must have been vetted by the same crack team who checked out Sarah Palin.

“Joe” isn’t a licensed plumber, and his employer, Al W. Newell, is not licensed in suburban Lucas County. Mr. Wurzelbacher also owes the State of Ohio $1,182.98 in personal income tax. His interest in tax policy is understandable.

A preliminary search shows that A W Newell Inc., DBA Newell Plumbing, at 5665 Cowan St, Toledo, OH, does plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contracting. The company has 2 employees and does about $100,000 a year in sales. Dun & Bradstreet puts the company’s taxable income between $150,000 and $200,000, so it would not suffer any rise in taxes under Senator Obama’s plan. The New York Times even gave the plumbing company some free business tax advice.

It turns out that “Joe” was once a constituent of Mr. McCain’s. He lived in Mesa and Tucson, leaving behind just a few court records. Incredibly, he also lived in Alaska, leaving behind some in-laws, but none of them seem to be Palins or troopers.

Senator McCain could easily think Toledo plumbers earn $250,000. After all, he thinks people who earn $3 million are middle class.
