Troopergate — Plane Talk Express

Troopergate -- Plane Talk Express

Robert Schlesinger of U.S. News and World Report discovered something hilarious in Todd Palin’s Troopergate testimony. Mr Palin says:

The state uses a King Air Turbo Prop for such travel [to rural communities in Alaska]…. It seemed like whenever Sarah needed this plane, it was unavailable…. [Public Safety Commissioner Walt] Monegan didn’t seem to understand how difficult it was to reschedule these trips on short notice and his failure to get on top of this issue was preventing Sarah from traveling to out-of the-way rural bush communities to visit her constituents.

Todd Palin says that’s why his wife fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan:

We were concerned that the Department of Public Safety was retaliating against Sarah for selling the Murkowski jet that…officials enjoyed using.

Mr. and Mrs. Palin can certainly be considered experts on retaliation.

Mr. Palin’s comments seem even funnier when you know that the infamous Alaska State Jet was mostly used to fly Alaska’s prisoners to and from rented prison space in Senator McCain’s home state. Alaska’s Department of Corrections leases private prison space in Florence, Arizona, near Scottsdale. Alaska’s Westwind II jet jet could get prisoners and escorts directly back and forth for court dates in a few hours. Since Governor Palin sold the jet, if commerical tickets are not available or prisoners are violent, one of the state’s two King Air 200 propeller planes must fetch the convicts, which takes longer due to lower flight speed and the need for refueling stops.

Now that Governor Palin finally managed to sell the jet to a campaign contributor, the King Air 200 planes spend more time shuttling between Arizona and Alaska and are not available for their primary duty, patrolling the commercial king crab fisheries. The planes are also not available to transport Her Highness the Hockey Mom and her paranoid, vindictive consort to backcountry bashes at a moment’s notice.

Commuter convicts, king crab crime, and cranks like the Palins. Ah, the wonders of Alaska.
