Gov. Palin (right) pals around with admitted embezzler, drug thief, and addict (left).

Governor Sarah Palin, Republican Vice Presidential candidate, spent the weekend continuing to exhibit her ignorance and contempt for the law. The Governor told crowds of Colorado supporters at three separate events Saturday that Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama was “palling around with terrorists.”

Governor Palin was referring to former Vietnam War protester William Ayers, who is married to former Vietnam War protester Bernadette Dohrn. The couple’s radical activities took place when Mr. Obama was eight years old.

This “Guilt by Association” reference has another slight flaw: Dr. Ayers has never been convicted of a crime. Both members of this married couple are nationally-recognized champions of child welfare:

William C. Ayers (BA, University of Michigan; MA, Bank Street College of Education; MFA, Bennington College; M.Ed, Teachers College, Columbia; Ed.D, Teachers College, Columbia) is Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar in the Education Department of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Bernardine Dohrn (BA with honors, MA, JD, University of Chicago) is the Director and founder of the Children and Family Justice Center and Clinical Associate Professor of Law at the Northwestern University Law School.

Perhaps Professor Dohrn, the children’s law scholar, could recommend some kiddie books on law for Governor Palin (BSc, University of Hawaii at Hilo – Hawaii Pacific College – North Idaho College – University of Idaho – Matanuska-Susitna College – University of Idaho; Miss Wasilla) explaining that Americans who are not convicted of crimes are “innocent,” even if they are Democrats, and that “Guilt By Association” is a pernicious ad hominem logical fallacy excluded from our system of justice.

You would think Governor Palin would avoid resorting to “Guilt by Association,” since she regularly “pals around” with an admitted felon who stole prescription drugs from a children’s charity to feed her own drug habit: Cindy McCain. Mrs. McCain paid her debt to society, sentenced to a vacation at an expensive celebrity spa. Of course, felony runs in the family.

Senator Obama’s ties with his neighbor Professor Ayers are legitimate and commendable; they both served on the boards of educational and anti-poverty foundations and charities. The ties of Governor Palin’s running mate and convicted criminal Charles H Keating Jr. of Lincoln Savings and Loan are somewhat shadier. Senator McCain received $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and associates, his wife and father-in-law invested $359,100 in a Keating shopping center, and the family used Keating’s jet and stayed at his Bahama retreat.

Governor: still persisting in this “Guilt by Association” business? Okay.

John McCain was one of the “Keating Five” senators who tried to pressure Federal regulators into dropping the case against Lincoln, which had violated rules against risky investments.  This bought the S&L some time, but the government finally seized Lincoln, which went bankrupt.

Senator McCain’s pal Charles H Keating Jr. was convicted by a 1993 federal jury of 73 counts of wire and bankruptcy fraud, sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison, and served 50 months before the conviction was overturned on a technicality. Six years later, 75-year-old McCain pal Keating pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud.

Senator McCain’s defense of his actions in meeting with regulators on behalf of Keating: bad judgement. What about the rest of his ties to Keating? Guilt by Association. Sure.

Governor Palin defended her Obama-Ayers comments Sunday in Long Beach, CA: “The comments are about an association that has been known but hasn’t been talked about.”  Keating-Lincoln was about imprudent investments and lax regulation. Is this a good time to bring that up?

Lincoln S&L was the most expensive failure in the decade-long national S&L scandal, when thrifts had to be rescued by the taxpayer. Does Governor Palin really  want voters to remember McCain and Keating as the banks and Wall Street are being bailed out?

Okay. We’ll oblige.
