The Grateful Dead band has a new partner: the University of California at Santa Cruz. The rock band has donated its voluminous archives to UCSC, announced members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart at San Fancisco’s Fillmore Auditorium. See it here.
Photographs, art, posters, letters, press clippings, backstage passes and fan memorabilia collected from since 1965 will be housed in The Grateful Dead Archive of the University Library’s Special Collections at UC Santa Cruz. Live recordings remain property of the Dead. Scholars and Deadheads should have plenty to occupy themselves.
The UCSC curriculum already includes a course on the Grateful Dead, and the town, an hour’s drive from San Francisco, is “a hotbed of current Deadhead culture” according to guitarist Bob Weir.
The project still requires plenty of fundraising, however. Bill Watkins, CEO of Seagate Technology Inc. and a longtime Dead fan, will help.
