PETA wants someone to synthesize your sirloin and manufacture your mutton. In celebration of Earth Day, the “Animal Rights” advocacy group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a million-dollar prize for the first people to produce and market manufactured meat from the lab.
There was a meeting of meat-minded scientists in Norway recently, chewing over ideas about in-vitro veal and cheeseburger cell culture, and this concept has tech-sector advocates. PETA thinks tenderloin technology would usher in a new Eden where animal slaughter would cease. Others are concerned that a quarter of the world’s land surface is used to raise meat or meat-feed, and residues from both pollute our waters and atmosphere.
In a world where the EU resists cloned veggies and animal products as “frankenfood,” PETA really should offer another million bucks for anyone who figures out how to market manmade meat.
