New Year’s Blast

New Year's Blast

Mike DeBonis of the City Paper blog greets the New Year with the All-New, Google-Map-enabled, 2008 Model Nuclear Blast Simulator (High Yield Detonation Effects Simulator or HYDEsim).

Select “Washington, DC” from the drop-down box and center the ground-level detonation on the landmark of your choice. If Santa didn’t bring you a GPS remember to use the Google map and satellite photo functions to navigate. Ready? Look at the “Overpressure Key” on the bottom.

Here near Lincoln Park a blast at the Capitol, White House or Mall means we will enjoy blast pressures of 5 psi (“Complete destruction of ordinary houses, and moderate to severe damage to reinforced concrete structures”) if not 15 psi (“Complete destruction of reinforced concrete structures, such as skyscrapers . . . . Between 7 psi and 15 psi, there will be severe to total damage to these types of structures”).

I think I need to get a new barometer.
