Rad-Islamic Campus Posters Ride Again

More campus commotion over posters, this time at the University of Florida, where Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin asked Campus Republicans to apologize for posters reading “Radical Islam Wants You Dead.” The posters promoted screening of the controversial film “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War against the West.”

Dr. Telles-Irvin wrote that the posters ‘reinforced a negative stereotype … and contributed to a generalization that only furthers the misunderstanding of the religion of Islam.”

Florida Attorney General   Ira William “Bill” McCollum, Jr. responded in a letter to the UF president, posted on the conservative blog Phi Beta Cons, claiming that Dr. Telles-Irvin’s letter:

“. . . may have violated the free speech rights of the students and organizations who posted this ad and sponsored the movie.  At the very least it has created a chilling effect on the free speech rights of students enrolled at the University of Florida.  As the Attorney General of Florida, it is my duty to protect the constitutional rights of all Floridians including civil rights and free speech rights.  Consequently, I have asked attorneys in my office to review this matter and advise me what if any action this office should pursue.  I am writing to request that you review this matter with your staff, legal counsel and the University Of Florida Board Of Trustees and, if they concur with my concerns, formulate and take some appropriate remedial action.”

According to the conservative blog “Jihad Watch, “Bernie Machen, the president of the university, and McCollum spoke on the phone Wednesday about the letter . . . . “

Florida Attorney General McCollum, former Republican Congressman and Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference, founded and chaired the House Republican Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare. He also served three terms on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, two as Chairman of its Subcommittee on Human Intelligence, Analysis and Counterintelligence. Mr. McCollum is the Florida Chairman of the Giuliani Presidential Campaign.

George Washington University experienced recent turmoil over posters spoofing “Islamofascism Awareness Week.”
