Turtle Rustlers Nabbed

Move ‘em up, head ‘em out . . . .

Two men were caught trying to smuggle 7,000 live baby turtles into China, the Associated Press reports.

Hong Kong police collared the crooks loading the tiny critters, packed in 300 cartons of water-filled clear plastic containers, into China-bound speedboats.

The livestock consisted of snapping turtles and some Razorback musk turtles, native to the U.S and Canada. There is said to be a growing market for pet turtles in China, according to the Ming Pao Daily News. I respectfully suggest that, while snappers are not great pets, they are pretty meaty. In any case, these species are not endangered and are said to be worth $21 to $192 each in China.

The U.S. might consider a legal trade of turtles for TVs to help the balance of payments with China.
