Today is the 100th anniversary of TV chef Julia Child’s birth, and it’s like food fans have been whipped into a frothy frenzy by balloon whisks. They’ve served up a music video (above), a Google Doodle, restaurant celebrations, and events at the Smithsonian, where Julia’s kitchen is now installed. Bon appétit, et joyeux anniversaire Julia!

Oreo Cookie Centennial

An American icon reaches the century mark today: the Oreo sandwich cookie. A classic. Two crisp, round, embossed chocolate-colored wafers separated by a thin stratum of sweet white paste. Nothing but the finest sugar, enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1}, riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid, high oleic canola oil and/or palm oil and/or canola oil and/or soybean oil, cocoa (processed with alkali), high fructose corn syrup, cornstarch, leavening (baking soda and/or calcium phosphate), salt, soy lecithin (emulsifier), vanillin — an artifical flavor, chocolate. Yum.

Happy Birthday Silvio Berlusconi

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi turned 75 yesterday. The AC Milan soccer team sent greetings to the embattled billionaire — he owns the franchise — but he got brickbats from most Italians. His biggest gift was a new sex scandal: former Miss Montenegro Katarina Knezevic says she had an affair with him.

IBM PC 1981

The personal computer turns 30. IBM’s PC was introduced in August 1981.

Fidel Castro turns 85 today. There was a big party in Havana but el comandante wasn’t there.

It’s 50 years since the birth of the Berlin Wall (Antifaschistischer Schutzwall or “Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart”) and most of it missed the party, too.
